The city of Brussels was under lockdown this week for four consecutive days, and on the highest state of alert over fears of a Paris-style attack by the militant Islamic State group.
While the suspected gunman from the Paris attacks, Salah Abdeslam, remains at large, much of the Belgian capital came to a standstill.
With soldiers patrolling the streets and the metro and local schools shut, only 3 children had school in Brussels: Mendel, Miriam and Chaya Rosenblum, children of Shluchim in Brussels, Belgium.
While the local cheder was closed, the children joined the Nigri International Shluchim Online School from the Shluchim office, Rabbi Michoel Rosenblum, Director of the European Synagogue (Ohel Eliezer) in Brussels, told COLlive.
“While we did close our Cheder, our Shul remained open this past Shabbos even while others closed,” Rosenblum said. “Thank G-d we were open for services and a full Shabbos meal and farbrengen, and we welcomed many visitors who usually attend other Shuls but theirs were closed,” he said.
“Of course, we have high security measures in place, including armed guards, police and military, which is the usual for us,” Rosenblum notes. “Our shul and offices have been open this week as well, and we are encouraging all to add in Torah and Mitzvos especially during the current climate here and in Eretz Yisroel!”
