Crown Heights Kaparos Relocates

After 40 years on Eastern Parkway, the location of the annual kaparos in Crown Heights was changed for next week Sunday.

By COLlive reporter

The location of the annual Crown Heights Kaparos, an ages-old Jewish ritual before the Yom Kippur day of atonement, will be moved from the offices of the NCFJE on Eastern Parkway in Brooklyn.

This year's new location will be at the parking lot of Bais Rivkah High School on Montgomery Street, behind 310 Crown Street. NCFJE said in a statement that the change, for the first time in 40 years, is done because of "various reasons."

NCFJE Chairman Rabbi Shea Hecht stated that "notwithstanding the pending legal action seeking to declare the practice of kaporos illegal, NCFJE will continue to offer kaporos to the community at $5 per chicken."

He added that the New York Post report that states that the case has been won wasn't accurate.

The Alliance to End Chickens as Kaporos had gone to court to try to have the judge issue an injunction against using chickens for kaporos, he explained.

On Monday of Rosh Hashanah, Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Debra James denied the request for the injunction. In October, the next court hearing will take place to deal with the other allegations of illegalities connected to the practice of kaporos.

Rabbi Hecht said the court case has forced NCFJE to allocate a large amount of funds and manpower to protect the minhag of kaporos.

It was his father, Rabbi JJ Hecht OBM, that worked to bring the mostly forgotten age-old custom back to the Jewish community. "NCFJE is and has always been strongly committed to making kaporos available to the greater Jewish community in and around New York City," his son said.

Kaparos at Beis Rivkah this Sunday will be available from 1:00pm-8:00pm for Crown Heights residents at $5 per chicken as in past years. Many residents have expressed gratitude for this low cost option, since other kaporos centers charge as high as $18-$25 per chicken.

Particularly this year, we appreciate the community's support and participation in kaporos, NCFJE said.

Convince yourself. How about you go in an ice bath until you're in shock then be boiled while still alive. You won't feel a thing. Don't worry, we would not put you through anything painful like swinging you around 3 times.

Contrary to claims made by seafood sellers, scientists have determined that lobsters, like all animals, can feel pain. Also, when kept in tanks, they may suffer from stress associated with confinement, low oxygen levels, and crowding. Most scientists agree that a lobster’s nervous system is quite sophisticated. Neurobiologist Tom Abrams says lobsters have “a full array of senses.”

Lobsters may feel even more pain than we would in similar situations. According to invertebrate zoologist Jaren G. Horsley, “The lobster does not have an autonomic nervous system that puts it into a state of shock when it is harmed. It probably feels itself being cut. … I think the lobster is in a great deal of pain from being cut open … [and] feels all the pain until its nervous system is destroyed” during cooking.

“As an invertebrate zoologist who has studied crustaceans for a number of years, I can tell you the lobster has a rather sophisticated nervous system that, among other things, allows it to sense actions that will cause it harm. … [Lobsters] can, I am sure, sense pain.”—Jaren G. Horsley, Ph.D

Anyone who has ever boiled a lobster alive knows that when dropped into scalding water, lobsters whip their bodies wildly and scrape the sides of the pot in a desperate attempt to escape. In the journal Science, researcher Gordon Gunter described this method of killing lobsters as “unnecessary torture.”

PETA has consulted with many marine biologists about the least cruel way to kill a lobster. While the experts couldn’t seem to agree on which method would cause the least suffering, they do agree that there really is no humane way to kill these sensitive and unusual animals.

You are quite right. Just to make sure, lets try throwing you in ice water before cooking you, and we'll watch and see if it really is as painless as you say.
