Rabbi Gershon Giter, a true chossid, soldier and a general at the same time and leader of a congregation in Twin Cities, Minnesota, passed away on Wednesday, Chof Av, 5775.
He was 61.
At one time a Refusenik from Leningrad, Rabbi Giter remained strong in his Judaism despite the many obstacles he faced.
The head of the KGB, who sent him to the death camps, told him “you are going to rot here.” Miraculously, he made it to the U.S. 6 months later.
He founded Congregation Bais Menachem, a center for Russian speaking Jews, in Minnesota after receiving a blessing from the Rebbe, which he led for many years.
He was known as a true Chossid and inspiration to many, and a leader of the community, performing hundreds of Brisim, weddings, Bar Mitzvahs and tirelessly working to bring many Jews closer to their roots.
He is survived by his wife Mrs. Leah Giter and children Reuven, Miriam Assayag, Sarale, Rochel and Menachem Mendel.
The Levaya will take place tomorrow, Thursday, at Shomrei Hadas Chapels, 3803 14th Ave in Boro Park at 10:30 am and passing by 770 at 11:15 am.
Internment at Old Montefiore Cemetery in proximity to the Ohel at approximately 12:15 p.m.

Beautiful young women of the special giter family. Certainly hashem will shower his chessed and rachamI’m upon you and your relentless mama, and your brothers, for, your father did so many acts of chesed and tzedakah behind the scenes, and asked of nothing in return.
Boruch Dayan HaEmes – words escape me, the pain I feel for you a mere drop in your pain – may you find comfort in continuing the mission of your holy father, both in his holy Shlichus and his very core, at all times a chosid – the ultimate role model for all. May we see him immediately with the coming of Moshiach.

Rabbi Giter and Leah Giter lived a mile from my home in Minnesota. I often came for Shabbat dinner, and came to their synagogue Seders, where they were good enough to find me a Hebrew-English Haggadah and to translate into English as well as Russian. I studied with him about Jewish mysticism, and he was so helpful to me about some personal issues. I loved his brilliant mind and his inimitable sense of humor. My condolences to Rebbitizin Leah, and to his children…

may his neshama have an aliyah
thinking of the entire family!
Rabbi Giter was someone who was an inspiration to everyone and his passion about the Rebbe was unbelievable. The way he spoke about his shichus and about the importance of being a chossid was relayed to people in such a touching way.
I never knew him but he seems like he was a very special person, a real pioneer and a real chosid. May we be re-united with him with Moshiach now!
