In preparation for their upcoming Rosh Hashana concert, Chazonim present an educational program for Cantors and enthusiasts to sing and learn about Chazonus. For this event, The Council of Chabad Chazonim joins forces with Cantor Zevi Muller at the West Side Institutional Synagogue.
The program will consist of Zevi Muller leading a short interactive lecture with examples of Chazonus. The theme of the discussion will be on how to make davening more meaningful through enhanced musical expression. Zevi is the nephew of famous Binyamin Muller and he has been the cantor on staff at WSIS for over a decade.
The program will then be open for Chazonim to get up and perform Chazonus pieces. The forum is meant to be a casual Kumzitz atmosphere where people can try out new pieces and perfect others. Many of our favorite local budding talents will sing as well as some new voices.
Cantor Levke Kaplan will share some general notes and comments on technique and style. Levke is a the founder of The Council of Chabad Chazonim. The council was founded over 10 years ago for providing training, performance opportunities and job placement for Chabad Chazonim.
The final section will be a very unique one: a “Chazonus Masterclass!”.
Classical music master classes are very common; typically led by a known musical authority who share their wisdom with young talented artists. In our case, Cantor Dovid Babinet will coach a couple of the most talented promising young voices today: Aryeh Leib Hurwitz and Zevy Steiger.
They will attempt to transform their pieces to the world class level, an exercise that will allow those in the audience to learn a lot from, by observing the development process.
Chazzan Dovid Babinet received his music training from the world’s authorities and he sang with Placido Domingo at the LA Opera as well as at other international venues. He is now a Chazzan and Voice Trainer and performs in concerts around the country.
Food and beverages as well as wine from “Babinet’s” private cellar will be available.
COLLive, Corey Steinbock Mattresses, Essel Eye-wear, Vaad Printing, Zarchi Quality Esrogim and from friends Jeff and Lynn Zadoff participated generously to make this event possible.
