By Rabbi Levi Garelik, an halachic authority in Brooklyn and Brussels who also dean of Sichosonline.org:
Question:
We do not take haircuts during Sefiras Ha’omer until Erev Shavuos.
The Rebbe writes in Hayom Yom that the Rebbe Rashab was not in favor of taking haircuts during shloshes yemei Hagbolo (the three days that precede Shsvuos). Haircuts may be taken only on Erev Shavuos.
The question is, this year Shavuos is on Sunday and Monday, so Erev Shavuos is on Shabbos, may one take a haircut on Friday, which is not yet Erev Shavuos as it still in the middle of Shloshes yemei hagbolo?
Answer:
There is a letter (printed in Kovetz Razash page 61) written by Reb Zalmen Shimon Dvorkin, who was the Rov in Crown Heights until 5745, where he addresses this question, as follows:
Many people have asked me this, and there is no question that on a Friday that precedes Erev Shavuos you should take a haircut on Friday (for several reasons) and I have done so myself.
Actually, when I was at the barber the telephone rang and it was Rabbi Hodakov on the line requesting of him, if at all possible, that he come at his earliest convenience to give a haircut to the Rebbe.
For more on this subject and hundreds of FAQ’s in Halocho, Darchei Hachasidim and video classes on Sichos of the Rebbe, can be found on Rabbi Garelik’s website Sichosonline.org
Mr Bergman. I think a’h. Lived upstairs from Shimshon Stock.
thursday night has the halachah like erev shabbos to.
Haircuts may be taken only on Erev Shavuos. Only? It is a preference, that’s all. This all sounds like a discussion among junior Litvishe bochurim. No pikchus and no chochma.
Who had such honor to cut the rebbe’s hair
Is there a difference before or after chatzos? When is the best time on friday?
Who was the rebbes barber?
any stories to share?
thanks 🙂
The question is being that the Rebbe change the minhog and allowed to make chasenes with music on 3 yemei hagbolo maybe there is also a change in the Rebbe Rashabs dislike to take haircuts then.
its not clear where RZSD quote ends. Is the story with Rabbi Hodakov from RZSD as well?
I don’t understand what you are trying to say why are yoy mekoros better then the letter and maase rav clarifying what is minhag Chabad
KSCVK should include an auction by CH barbers for first three haircuts. could yo imagine the lines on friday?
that’s gotta be oholei torah shprach. you can take a shower, but not “take” a haircut. you GET one.
Of course in sforim there are opinions (and what you are quoting is brought in shevach hamoadim), however Rabbi Garelik is bringing a chabad source and one that is written by the source himself (Rabbi Dworkin). The “testimony” that you quote (from Shevach Hamoadim) do you know where that “testimony” was said? to whom? when?
to 13
there is a halocho that minhag mvatel din
One may begin listening to music (and make weddings) on Wed night, the first of the three days of Hagboloh.
…Only on FRIDAY. we do NOT take them Thursday night.
I do not understand the Chidush or peoples question.
Taking a haircut before Yom Tov is a Halacha, not cutting hair during the omer / sheloshes yemai hagbalah is a Minhag.
Some poskim say yes, while others say no.
According to Rabbi Yosef Simcha Ginsburg there’s no problem.
But probably it should be done on Friday preferably
Music can we listened to from wed. night after counting the omer. cant wait!
this is brought in kaf Hachaim and in the Minchas Elozor. Rabbi Shmuel Levitin testified as well that so was custom in lubavitch to take the haircut Erev Shabbos when Shavuos is Sunday.
thank you for the answer, because i was wondering about this.
How about Thursday night?
It’s a breath of fresh air to have articles as such.
Thursday night?
I had the question.
Thank you for that, very informative. What about music? Does anyone know when we can listen to music again? Please post with a mekor.
What about Thursday night?
Thank you so much for clarifying!
