New York State Senator Jesse Hamilton has paid a visit to Israel Shemtov, a veteran Jewish community activist in Crown Heights who was attacked on Wednesday.
The brief meeting was held Friday at the study hall of Yagdil Torah on Empire Boulevard, across the street from Shemtov’s men’s clothing store. Hamilton was accompanied by activist Yaacov Behrman.
Shemtov, 75, was punched in the face and rushed to the hospital after intervening in a public disturbance incident on Kingston Avenue by a black male.
Noting that the attacker “was highly intoxicated,” Detective Vincent Martinos of the NYPD’s 71st Precinct told COLlive that the man broke a candy machine in front of the store prior to his attack on Shemtov.
“The perpetrator was arrested at the scene and was charged with Class D Violent Felony and assault in the second degree,” Martinos said. “Now it’s up to the office of the District Attorney to pursue the case with a court hearing.”
At the meeting, Shemtov thanked Hamilton for expressing his concern and recalled an incident in 1990 when he saved the life of an African American girl who was shot 10 times. “I was later invited to her wedding,” he said.
Hamilton said he will follow up on the incident and make sure “it gets the full seriousness it deserves.”
