Mrs. Chana Chaya Marasow, a long-time member of the Lubavitch community in Montreal, Canada, who raised a chassidic family there, passed away on Thursday, 27 Nissan 5775.
She was 77.
Born in Pryluky, Russia, her parents where R’ Naftali and Golda Ita Junik, descendants of the chassidic Rebbes Reb Levi Yitzchok of Berditchev , Reb Pinchos of Koritz and Reb Menachem Nochum of Chernobyl.
Her father became acquainted with Chabad Chassidus under the encouragement of Pryluky’s Rabbi Hillel Solozuvski. Her father, a G-d fearing Jew, insisted on not sending his children to government-run schools and instead sent them to an underground cheder.
At the outbreak of World War II, the Junik family escaped to Tashkent from Moscow, Rabbi Michoel Seligson writes. In 1946, the family was able to immigrate to Poland, under the guise of being Polish citizens who had escaped during the war and were returning to their homeland.
After her marriage, Mrs. Marasow settled in the emerging Chabad community in Montreal which was home to many Holocaust survivors and refugees from the Soviet Union.
She is survived by her children Mrs. Devorah Wolosow, Mrs. Rivka Baumgarten, both of Crown Heights, Mrs. Nechama Perlstein, Mrs. Mally Ehrentrei, R’ Yossel Marasow and R’ Mendel Marasow, all of Montreal; grandchildren and great grandchildren.
She is also survived by her sister Mrs. Eta Jurkowitz of Montreal.
She was predeceased by her husband R’ Chaim Schneur Zalman Marasow who passed away on 9 Nissan 5763 and her brothers R’ Berel Junik, a member of the Rebbe and Rebbetzin’s household, R’ Dovid Junik of Antwerp, Belgium and R’ Meir Junik of Montreal.
The funeral took place on Thursday. Shivah is being observed at 5894 Trans Island, Montreal, Quebec. Mrs. Wolosow and Baumgarten will be sitting Shiva in New York on Tuesday at 1577 Union (between Albany and Toy Avenues).
