A number of Crown Heights residents have been arrested recently for driving with a suspended license, Crown Heights Shomrim has warned.
In most cases, the drivers were completely unaware of the suspension, Shomrim noted.
They recommend that residents check the status of their license to make sure they are allowed to drive.
According to the NY State Department of Motor Vehicles website, conviction of a serious traffic violation or multiple traffic violations can result in the suspension or revocation of your driver license or privilege to drive in New York State.
It is illegal to drive a motor vehicle when your driver license or driving privilege is suspended or revoked.
If your license or driving privilege is suspended or revoked, DMV will send a notice (called an “order”) to the address they have on file.

What does it mean if my driver license or driving privilege is suspended?
A suspension means your license or driving privilege will be taken away for a period of time before it is returned. You may be required to pay a suspension termination fee. The suspension period can be definite (which has a beginning and end date) or indefinite, which does not end until you take a required action.
If you receive a definite suspension order, it will tell you how long the suspension period will last. You cannot drive until the suspension period ends, pay a suspension termination fee, and have a valid driver license. You can use DMV’s MyLicense Status, Renewal and Replacement service to check if your license is valid.
Common reasons for definite suspensions are:
– you did not have automobile liability insurance
– you were convicted of an alcohol or drugged driving charge
– you received too many traffic tickets in a certain amount of time
– you did not follow the rules for junior drivers
If you receive an indefinite suspension order, it will tell you what you must do to remove the suspension, such as answer a traffic ticket, pay a traffic ticket fine or file a motor vehicle crash report.
Common reasons for indefinite suspensions are:
– you did not answer a traffic ticket
– you did not pay for a traffic ticket fine
– you did not file a motor vehicle accident report
– you failed to pay child support
– you have unpaid NYS tax debts
Note: Your license or driving privilege may be suspended due to a medical condition that affects your ability to drive safely (see Administrative Review Suspensions).
#7, you can change it online. You can change it in the mail. You can change it on the phone.
Yes, there are lots of minutiae about driving, but driving is a privilege, and the responsibility is on us, the drivers, to know the rules before we get behind the wheel.
there is nothing wrong with anything that they said
To #5 good luck making the long lines at the DMV of course we are talking about people with jobs, bills to pay, Don’t so quick to judge.
So your saying you dont care if someone gets arrested what if it happend to you what would you say
Which, #4, is exactly the reason that you have 7 days from the date you moved to inform the DMV of your address change. It was in the book for your driver’s exam.
I am usually a very conscientious person taking care of paperwork. I once got a ticket for a minor Infraction and paid the ticket. The ticket for some reason had an extra charge that I didn’t see. I had moved and was past the date mailed was forwarded and person who lived there did not inform me that I had mail from the city. I had no idea that I owed $15 on an old ticket. Fast forward a few years and I was at the DMV and they told me that I had a suspended license!!! I was shocked!… Read more »
are people here realy so ignorant that they are not aware they dont have a valid license? i say you deserve to be arrested if you really have such ignorance. there are rules. follow them. we should be setting examples as law abiding jews not low lives.
There is nothing messed up about getting arrested for suspended licenses. Follow the rules and you have no problems.
Instead of warning people that offenders are being prosecuted, how about warning people not to drive on a suspended license!
