The city of Rostov joyously celebrated Chanukah with a wide array of fun and exciting programs catering to all ages.
The highlight of the week was a concert by world famous entertainer, Dudu Fisher, attended by 1,400 people in the largest concert hall in Rostov. Dudu captivated the audience with heartwarming personal stories and songs in many languages, and won the hearts of the community singing along with the local Jewish boys choir.
Following the concert, a long-time member of the community named Leonid thanked Dudu for igniting childhood memories. Leonid said it’s the first time in many years that he has heard Yiddish spoken like that of his grandmother.
Members of the RoshTov youth club visited seniors and holocaust survivors in their homes each night of Chanukah, delivering food packages and lighting menorahs for them, bringing them the warmth and light of Chanukah. One student remarked, “I thought I was going to help them, but instead I gained so much inspiration from these heroic members of our community. It was a really amazing experience!”
On Sunday, families and students enjoyed ‘Chanukah On Ice’ with lively Jewish music, fabulous contests, delicious doughnuts and a beautiful menorah-lighting ceremony. “Chanukah is a time to openly display our Jewish pride, by lighting menorahs in public and parading through the streets with menorahs on our cars. Throughout all the daily Chanukah programs this year, the Jews of Rostov have really demonstrated their deep Jewish pride more than ever.” Said Rabbi Chaim Danzinger
