Thousands of protesters around the country took to the streets over Shabbos to decry what they considered police brutality — one such protest marched through Crown Heights.
Demonstrators effectively shut down streets and bridges in New York City, Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Denver, Detroit, Minneapolis and Washington, DC where Rev. Al Sharpton led the protest.
In Manhattan, an estimated 25,000 demonstrators gathered in Washington Square Park for a 2 p.m. march to One Police Plaza outside the NYPD headquarters, according to CBS2.
They held signs and chanted “No Justice, No Peace – no racist police” expressing outrage over the grand jury decisions not to indict the police officers involved in the Eric Garner and Michael Brown cases, the station reported.
Garner died in July after police officers attempted to arrest him in Staten Island and Brown was fatally shot by police in Ferguson, Missouri. Both officers weren’t charged.
The march in New York City spilled into other boroughs over the course of the day with thousands of marchers walking over the Brooklyn Bridge.
At around 9 pm, one such march passed by Lubavitch Headquarters at 770 Eastern Parkway, where a black man was shot to death by police after stabbing a Yeshiva student. They chanted “Shut it down!”
Heavy police presence was noted near the large synagogue. The entrance doors, through which 50-year-old African American Calvin Peters entered wielding a knife on Tuesday, were closed.
Crown Heights residents were advised to stay indoors to avoid further confrontation, but one Yeshiva student told COLlive.com of a brief conversation he held with a protester outside 770.
According to him, the black man told him: “You guys are protected. That’s money over there.”
The bochur told him, “You heard what happened here last week?”
“Yes,” the person replied, “He was a brother and we are dealing with a lot of racism now. so I want to say, nothing but love. Lechaim.”

No matter how much people rely on police for safety and no matter how much the police do their job to protect others a lot of the time, it is no less murder (or negligent homicide) when a police officer does it! Eric Garner was physically attacked by the police while standing on a street despite not being informed that he was under arrest and without fighting back. Eric was subjected to an illegal choke-hold and unable to breathe while he was (wrongfully) tackled and brought down to the ground. When the choke-hold was released the same officer then proceeded… Read more »
I have friends who are frum yiddin who are posting in support of these people. These are the people who were chanting that they want dead cops. I want live cops. I don’t care if they have to drop every one of these protesters to keep it that way.
the police
There is a professional industry, run by elite liberal Yidelach, called the “grievance industry”. Their mission is to incite ignorant people to believe that they are being targeted by the authorities because of their race or ethnicity. The facts don’t matter. It doesn’t matter that the man who was shot by an officer was a thug who had just burglarized a store and whom, according to credible wittnesses attacked the officer. The only thing that matters is that a white officer shot a black man, and accrding to the liberal Yidden that run the grievance industry, that only could have… Read more »
Yes, this was ‘not aimed at 770 and the Jewish community’ BUT, for many of us, who HAD gone through the disturbances aka ‘riots’ in 1991, when the protesters came down the street, especially towards Utica, it was quite unraveling to say the least. Keeping in mind that there were protests in the city anywhere from the number of 25,000 to 45,000 it may have been no big deal but I am sure I was not the only one having flashbacks. Seeing what is going on all over, and how the ‘leadership’ from the top down in this country is… Read more »
but he is a rev., so…what’s your point? it’s just a title that is used for him
You do realize there are others races marching with the protesters. They do have jobs, some are students, parents, retired folks. You would realize why these protest take place at night.
There is a protest coming: Tonight, as I passed by Kingston Ave. on my way to the train, I saw lines of police officers surrounding both sides of the street in front of 770. When I asked about what was going on, I was told that there would be a protest that would be passing by. Having understood, that those who were marching were expressing their outrage with regard to police brutality, and the unjustified use of force used by officers across the country, which has led to not only deaths but also to unlawful harassment, detainment, and imprisonment of… Read more »
NYC didn’t have to let these protesters anywhere near 770, but DinkinsASSio Jr. purposely allowed it, just like his brother Dinkins. Yemach shemam both of them.
Nothing to do with the 770 incident
first it was occupy wall street
and now my friends the same “folks” who orchestrated that are doing this.
They want to shut America down.. it’s time everyone wake up and realize this is all part of their plan.
I am not an alarmist .. just a realist.
how can we as Jews forget …………..this is how it all starts.
You get the crowds whipped up and especially when you have so many looking for a “life”
we need Moshiach!!
Or didn’t choose the 5th ave ?
Why they choose CH mostly Jewish e.pkwy street ?
What we are as Jewish people responsible for any police /jury brutality ?
Read, and judge.
AS LONG AS YOU HAVE THE PRESIDENT, ATTORNEY GENERAL, MAYOR, AND OTHER OFFICIALS QUESTIONING THE INTEGRITY OF OUR JUDICIAL SYSTEM, WE WILL HAVE A FURTHER DECIMATION OF SOCIETY. THESE OFFICIALS ARE MAKING A MOCKERY OF THE SYSTEM, AND THEY SHOULD BE HELD LIABLE FOR INCITEMENT OF RIOTING.
Very well put!
can everyone just think for a second. These african americans are trying to peacefully and trying to prove a point.
if any of you guys cared to read the article you will see that they have nothing against our community. so please stop throwing so much hate at them
kol tov!
they were not marching through crown heights because of the incident that happened here. There have been marches and protests across the country because of numerous cases of police killing people and not being held accountable. This had nothing to do with the 770 incident, and there has not been any real backlash. The police dealt with the situation well – only shot was fired and the guy was armed and intent on causing harm.
They were saying “shut it down” all over at every demonstration, and not just in front of 770.
Is not fair! We want to commit crime and not be persecuted for it. What haters policemen are!
i am appalled
that you give sharpton a title “rev.”.
is there no limit to “political correctness” ?!
Police brutality and lack of police accountability affects us all. Do you want to live in a country with a corrupt justice system? I certainly do not.
…its time to take out the gear which the Rebbe supplied us with!!!
What sometimes happens after such things is that the police will try to pander to the rioters by looking for a ‘suspicious looking’ Jew to assault or harass in order to ‘equalize things’. Please do not think the police have much concern for the welfare of our community or appreciate the fact that we don’t commit those crimes. Remember, the attacker was killed only because he tried to attack a police officer. If he had come out alive, chances are teh charges would have been minimized and he would have been out on the street within a matter of months.
I happen to be near 770 when this group of protestrs marched by. There were about 200 of them. Not angry, just shouting no justice……. I would definitely make sure people walk in groups, well lit areas, and not late at night… Although this group was actually mostly white, and passive, it can get ugly on the drop of a dime. This type of protest in the CH will only get bigger in the coming weeks, and should bad elements join these groups, we can see trouble. We definitely need police on our corners,
Hu??
First heard the chopper, then saw the search light passing over Oholei Torah, dozens of police vehicles, and random people running… Thought there was a big fire, or a bomb. Was extremely relieved that it was just a (bh peaceful) march.
And against the court system,etc.
After all they aquitted the officer.
And dont forget to protest against the constitution which gave the jury to convict or acquit.
They regard a vicious thug like Michael Brown as a hero. That says everything one needs to know about them.
The Garner case is more complicated, but every sane person knows there was no racism involved. Whether the police acted correctly or not, if a white person acted like Garner they would have treated him exactly the same.
This reminds me of the 91 riots CRAZY
“Shut it down” is what they were saying the whole day about THE CITY – there was a huge protest today of 25000 people that started in Manhattan and they were shouting to shut the city down.
The cops have such Chutzpa. They blocked of 770 ,and suddenly when the protest move forward they drove off
How DARE they come into OUR community and play the victim after what happened last week in 770?!?!?! These protesters are taking advantage of the first amendment and totally abusing it. Enough already! Instead of figuring out what they can do to prevent casualties in the future, they are wasting our time by closing up streets and disturbing the peace. They all need to get a job and a life, and maybe, just maybe, try abiding the law to prevent this from happening again in the future.
BS”D what more can you expect from them, the Blacks (oops I mean African American people ) have no leaders to guide them, only leaders who tell them they been had so anything goes
could someone explain to me why this man is interfering with the police search?
Look they want to go on attacking people in the neighborhood in peace.. and the police are just getting in their way. It’s pretty logical when you think about it.
What are they referring to
I hope this doesn’t turn into a furgenson…
Should I be scared
