WASHINGTON, D.C. – It was announced today that Vice President Joe Biden will attend the program marking the 35th Anniversary of the National Chanukah Menorah Lighting, held on the Ellipse.
The National Menorah, the world’s largest, will be lit in a ceremony seen around the world Tuesday, December 16 at 4:00 pm, he first night of Chanukah.
“We are honored that Vice President Joe Biden will be attending the lighting ceremony of the National Menorah on December 16th,” said Rabbi Levi Shemtov, Executive Vice President of American Friends of Lubavitch (Chabad), which sponsors the annual event.
He is the highest ranking U.S. government official to light this public menorah in 35 years.
Further logistical information for guests is forthcoming, and attendees are encouraged to arrive as early as possible due to security measures. Gates will open at approximately 2:00PM.
The jumbo chanukiah stands on the Ellipse across from the White House. The event will begin at 4 p.m. and is scheduled to include holiday foods like latkes and sufganiot. The U.S. Army Band, “Pershing’s Own,” will be among the musical entertainers.
The lighting of the National Menorah, just across from the White House in Washington, DC, is annually attended by thousands every year and seen by tens of millions across the nation and around the world via TV newscasts.
