In a possible nod to this year’s KINUS HASHLUCHIM held this week in New York, Apple’s iTunes worldwide music site has selected and posted Chabad producer Zalman Goldstein’s “Chabad Centennial Symphony” as the first Jewish music video available for sale and rent in its acclaimed “Concert Film” section.
iTunes has featured Jewish music for many years, including all 300+ tracks from Zalman Goldstein’s “Chabad Classics” series, but this is the first time a Jewish concert film passed quality control and artistic rigor for their film library.
The iTunes description reads: “Immerse yourself in an incredible philharmonic journey spending 300-years of Chabad Chassidic musical masterworks, captured live by Emmy award-winning video and audio directors. Performed before an audience of 2000 in Manhattan Center, the history making musical tribute was described as ” A brilliant and breathtaking Celebration!” — Dudu Fisher; “Deeply Satisfying” — Mordechai Ben David (MBD); “Simply Spectacular” — Michael Issacson/Israel Pops Orchestra. Highlights include the performance of international Chassidic star, Avraham Fried, who gives an emotionally-laden rendition of some of the most powerful and moving melodies in Chabad’s illustrious repertoire, as well as that the debut performance of the Russian-Jewish full group Nikolayev Kapellia, plus a new behind-the-scenes featurette.”
iTunes has it available for purchase for $9.95, and for rent for $3.99.
Reached for comment, producer Zalman Goldstein said he was delighted, but not at all surprised. “This event was truly one of a kind, I still can’t believe I managed to pull it off back then, there were so many moving parts and talented people involved. The fact that it is still enjoyed and watched over and over more than 10 years later is testimony to the power of our Niggunim. Looking back, I am grateful for having the foresight to have the event recorded by top-line camera producers, the same people who did ‘Live from Lincoln Center,’ which gave the world the ability to enjoy the music again and again.”
His recently released album “NONSTOP CHABAD – SOFT & EASY,” a follow-up to his hit “NONSTOP CHABAD” CD is also among the many Chabad tracks available in the iTunes music library.

To all you younger guys out there who missed this link in history: I remember Zalman Goldstein’s music tapes (what’s that?) creating the history of Jewish music, way before jewish music became so popular (a new cd every week). Back in those days we all remembered what Jewish-flavored music sounded like. Zalman Goldstein kept to that sensitivity from then and until his new CDs today. Today, too many artists lost that touch… 🙁

I was at the concert when it was performed and it was an incredible experience. I brought my father who was 79 at the time and he was emotional the whole evening weeping and dancing in his place. The joy this gave him I can’t describe in words. We were sitting among at least 2500 people of all walks of life, from every community.
