The concept of ‘Shofar Factory’ was new to children of the Friendship Circle in Central Jerusalem.
The intrigue brought children with special needs from as far as Maalei Adumim to particpate in a pre Rosh Hashana event that included an arts ‘n crafts making and a shofar presentation that had the children and parents riveted and ended with pizza, veggies and dips and ice cream.
The children were able to experiment on various animal horns and learned of the fascinating meaning of the shofar.
Each child, with the help of a dedicated volunteer, was able to saw, drill, sand and polish a shofar.
The sounds of machinery whirring in the room brought the Director of Wizo out of her office and into the circle.
“Penina was so moved by the ‘friendship’ energy and warm atmosphere,” said FC directors Chana Canterman and Rena Traxler, “that she ignored the agreed ending time of 6:30 and made no comment when at 7:30 pm, volunteers had to kindly usher children out the door.”
Ten year old Rafi, after creating his own real Shofar to the finish, exclaimed, “Wow, this time, Chag Rosh Hashana is alive!”
