The Samborer Rebbe, Rabbi Hershel Yolles, passed away (Monday afternoon), the 29th of Av. He was 82.
Rabbi Yolles was a direct descendant of the Ba’al Shem Tov (the founder of the Chassidic movement), Reb Elimelech of Lizensk and the Sanzer Rebbe.
He was the product of a profound family tradition, a lifetime of Jewish learning, and an unbroken chain of generations steeped in the beauty and depth of Torah. Originally from Klausenberg, then Bucharest, he learned in Tomchei Tmimim in Montreal and then settled in Boro Park.
Rabbi Yolles exhibited the sweetness, the joy, the care and concern for every Jewish soul, that is associated with Chassidus.
He was laid to rest Monday evening at the cemetery in New Square, next to his beloved wife, Esther (z”l). They are survived by two daughters: Ms. Chany Yolles and Mrs. Yaffa Feder, and grandchildren.
Ms. Chany Yolles and Mrs. Yaffa Feder are sitting shiva at:
1460 44th St Apt 3K
and getting up tomorrow morning, Monday, Sept 1

Reb Efroim’s wife was the sister of Reb Hershel’s father, so he was a nephew. In addition to Reb Efroim being a first cousin of Reb Elazer (father of Reb Hershel).
Reb Elazar, the Sambor Rebbe in Montreal was the son of Reb Yehuda Zvi Yolles, son and successor of the tzaddik Reb Uri Yolles, first Sambor Rebbe
Definitely could not be the Skulener Rebbe because he came to America much later. I wish you could find out who it actually was.
I used to drive him around when he visited the Bay Area when I first became baale teshuvah . Mesiriot nefesh was the derech, chesed was his strength and fulfilling the Rebbe’s will with joy was his will. I will miss him very much. Together we saved a Kohen from missionairies and from being buried in a goyische cemetary and I watched him teach Torah to three Jews in a traife restaurant on their lunch hour with platters of bacon floating by. He was a big light and I will miss my dear friend very much, needless to say.We all will.- Dovid… Read more »
I believe he was a nephew. I spoke to Rev Hirshel a few weeks ago and everything that was said about him is so true. So gentle, caring and sensitive. He told me the story of a certain rebbe in Williamsburg( I think it was the skerlerner but not certain) he would go out from his home to the shul every motzei shabbos. It was Yud shvat Tov shin yud and this rebbe came out but did not go to the shul. He sensed the histalkus of the fridikeme rebbe and did not feel the heart to prarve melave malka.Reb… Read more »
