Kathy Hochul, whom Governor Andrew Cuomo chose as his running mate and candidate for lieutenant governor in the upcoming 2014 elections, visited the Jewish community of Crown Heights.
Ms. Kochul, a former Congresswoman representing Upstate New York, was excited to learn all she could about the Crown Heights community this past Thursday.
Kochul began her tour at the home of R’ Chanina and Orly Sperlin, where she sat with community leaders to hear of the community’s concerns, such as affordable education, housing and public safety.
As a former member of the House Armed Services Committee, Ms. Hochul had visited Afganistan. She was surprised to learn that Colonel and Chaplain Rabbi Jacob Goldstein of Crown Heights had also been to Afganistan and was returning there soon.
Then, she strolled down Kingston Avenue, meeting residents and dropping in to local stores. She stopped off to buy ice cream, as well as to inspect the old-style fish store owned by the Raskin family.
Assemblyman Karim Camara, who represents Crown Heights in Albany, joined Ms. Hochul for a visit to 770 where she learned about the Rebbe and his custom of distributing dollars for charity. The candidate was visibly moved by the spirituality of 770.
In the course of the visit, the candidate for Lt. Governor discussed the Governor’s support for Israel, as demonstrated by his recent trip there and of the administration’s commitment to combat anti-Semitism and hate crimes against the Jewish community.
She mentioned that her husband, as a US Attorney, had been instrumental in prosecuting hate crimes in Western New York.
Why are there only lubavitch men with her? Are there no female lubavitchers with a say?
