The neighborhood is buzzing about the Mayan Center, a new space that has brought fitness, dance, and creativity into Crown Heights. Now the Mayan Center is also available for catered simchas and all kinds of events.
The center, which can accommodate up to 100 people, is a newly renovated building that makes for both a cozy and stylish setting. The contrast of the vibrant, colorful Chassidic paintings dotting the walls and the dark wooden floors create an atmosphere that is simultaneously trendy and heimish. Crown Heights residents welcome this long overdue establishment in the neighborhood; the response has been overwhelmingly positive.
“It was beautiful, cozy, and the perfect size for our event,” lauded Rabbi Shmuli Turk, who recently hosted an upsherin at the center. “The convenient location in the heart of Crown Heights, right on Kingston Avenue, was a huge bonus. The built-in sound system was also a plus. I’d do something there again.”
Residents and visitors making their way up Kingston Avenue—whether they are running to the train or strolling toward a local shop—will notice a digital screen outside the establishment that used to be Nosh World. This announcement board informs passersby of upcoming simchas and other events.
The Mayan Center hosts events ranging from kiddushim, lechaims, bar mitzvahs, and sheva brachos, to concerts, open-mic nights, and more. Prospective patrons will be pleased to learn that the center offers a dance floor, hot plates, and refrigeration. A workspace for caterers and a deluxe, state-of-the art sound system are also provided.
Liel Maximov, co-founder of the Mayan Center, explained that she tries to go the extra mile to accommodate the needs of her clientele.
Yehudis Tovshtein, who recently hosted her daughter’s bas mitzvah at the center shared: “We chose the Mayan Center, because it has a high ceiling, a lot of space, and a gorgeous, modern look. The staff patiently answered all of our questions. We were very pleased.”
A friendly backyard hosts a variety of outdoor events and a safe play areas for kids. Exercise classes, including Zumba, are growing in popularity. Tovshtein found the backyard particularly useful during her event. “While the ladies danced indoors, the men had tables and chairs set up in the backyard so they could schmooze outside,” she said.
The Mayan Center aims to be the premier spot where Crown Heights residents can let their imaginations roam freely. “Around Succos time we will have an esrog auction,” said Liel with pride. Rapidly becoming a neighborhood resource, more and more people are finding innovative ways to utilize this new multipurpose space.
