Whenever summer vacation rolls around, college and graduate students are faced with numerous options for how they will spend their time off from school. Starting this summer students can now add the newly designed and invigorated Jewish Summer Fellowship (JSF) program to their list of possibilities on the horizon. The JSF is a five-week summer program that gives college and graduate students a chance to learn about their Jewish heritage while having fun, meeting fellow students from around the globe, and making memories that will last a lifetime.
The JSF was born out of the Ivy League Torah Study Experience – a program that over the course of three decades developed many great leaders in Jewish life today such as esteemed author, Rabbi Chaim Miller, campus shlucha Rebbetzin Miri Birk (Cornell), and shliach Rabbi Yakov Bankholter (Chabad Loft, NYC). The JSF represents the culmination of firsthand knowledge and experience gained from ILTSE combined with sweeping changes that make it a fresh and exciting new program. Equipped with an all-new staff of top-notch education professionals, an enhanced curriculum, renovated new dormitories, and beautiful grounds JSF offers much to the student seeking Jewish wisdom and meaning.
The JSF can aptly be described as an adventure for one’s mind, body, and soul. The superb academics are replete with stimulating, challenging classes and lively discussions. In addition, the program hosts popular scholars and speakers such as Rabbis Yitzchak Schochet (UK), Berel Bell, Shais Taub, Eli Silberstein (Cornell), Eliezer Sneiderman (University of Delaware), Mrs. Malka Touger, Chana Silberstein, and Bronya Shaffer. The in-depth Torah study is complemented by plenty of opportunities for athletic and social activities such as hiking, whitewater rafting, canoeing, barbeques, and trips to New York City. As an added bonus every JSF student is given a generous stipend for participating in the program.
But perhaps the greatest thing about the JSF is that it is a full 5-week cultural immersion experience. Jewish students from all walks of life come together and delve into the teachings and traditions that sustained their ancestors for over four millennia, all while having a good time. No other program offers a comparable atmosphere. Many a campus Chabad house or Birthright Israel trip kindles in the heart of the Jewish student a powerful spark of inspiration and a strong desire to learn more about Yiddishkeit. However, most students do not have the time to commit to full time yeshiva enrollment. For such inspired, motivated students there is no better place than JSF. If you are a Chabad shliach or shlucha on a college campus and there is student at your Chabad house who is interested in learning more about Judaism while having an amazing time, be sure to tell them about the JSF. Your student will love it!
In recognition and appreciation of the tremendous amount of effort, campus shluchim put in day in and day out in their work with students, The National Committee for the Furtherance of Jewish Education has arranged a sponsor to give grants to campus shluchim. For every student that attends JSF through a Chabad on campus, the shliach will receive seven hundred dollars.
