If Elena Kokin had any doubt whether to sign up her son to the Mamesh Music school in Crown Heights, she got her answer quickly.
“I think he has a natural talent,” she said about her 8-year-old Schneur Zalman Kokin, a Grade 3 student at United Lubavitcher Yeshiva on Crown Street.
“He knows so many niggunim and remembers the new ones he learns at school,” she said. “We wanted to sign him last year but we decided to wait for him to grew a little older.”
A year has passed since. When a neighbor shared with her a flyer about an orientation at the after-school program, she decided it was time to give it a try and arrived there this past Sunday, 19 Elul.
Some 200 people packed the Lubavitcher Yeshiva hall with children aged 8-14 invited to to try out instruments, learn what goes into mastering an instrument and enjoy performances by teachers.
“We wished to enroll in the school, but we couldn’t, as we didn’t have a keyboard to practice on at home,” Kokin said.
And then the school’s director Zalman Negin held drew the raffle. The name chosen to became the proud owner of a brand-new keyboard was Shneur Zalman Kokin.
“We all were overjoyed,” the mother commented. “I can’t believe we came here and won it!”
Other winners of the raffle were Chaim Yona Haskelevich (a set of Sefer HaNiggunim) and Chaya Spielman (musical instruments from the Expressive Arts store).
Not only this was a thrilling moment for the guests, but the crowd also got to see a special pre-presentation of the debut music video that is soon to be released by the Mamesh Music Choir & Band.
“Boruch Hashem, the event was very entertaining and informative to all the guests,” concluded Negin, the director of the program. “We are welcoming all the new students who have signed up, and we look forward to seeing many more join the ‘family’.”
Mamesh Music teaches music to children in a Chassidic environment. A separate girls program is organized by Dana Pestun.
