Weberman Sentenced For Life

Brooklyn frum counselor Nechemya Weberman, 54, was sentenced to 103 years in prison for abusing a young girl.

By COLlive reporter

Kings County District Attorney Charles Hynes Tuesday announced the sentencing of Nechemya Weberman to 103 years in prison for abusing a young girl over the course of 3 years.

Weberman, a Satmar chossid who counseled troubled youth, was convicted on the top count of Course of ... Conduct Against a Child in the First Degree on December 10, 2012 before Brooklyn Supreme Court Justice John Ingram.

"If there is one message to take away from this case it is that this office will pursue the evil of... abuse of a child no matter where it occurs in this county," Hynes said in a statement.

"The abuse of a child cannot be swept under the rug or dealt with by insular groups believing only they know what is best for their community.

"In this case it took the courage of a young woman to drive home the point that justice can only be achieved through the involvement of civil authorities charged with protecting all the people."

Weberman, 54, was counseling the victim beginning when she was 12. From 2007 to 2010, Weberman abused the girl multiple times, mostly in his office, according to the statement.

not sure
life imprisonment seems a little excessive ..i think it's profiling again like rubashkin...i don't condone his actions by any means, but a 10 year sentence would have been harsh enough
maybe on appeal it can change

Not excessive at all
to #3. Life imprisonment is nothing and not excessive for the life of imprisonment he put that girl through. This should serve as a lesson to all the other molesters and pedophiles out there.

not so sure...
While I am releived and happy that a pedophile will be punished, I'm uneasy that anti semitism and anti religious played a part in this sentence.

for not so sure
I don't see antisemitism , in 3 lives or 450 year sentence he will not heal the damage he did abusing his position, this is not a raper from a corner , he manipulated using his religious investiture , if is true of course all accusations is very well deserved

no matter what he did, no one deserves 103 yrs in prison! its to much! we need moshiach!

so he can do it again in 10 years??????? I think the punishment fits the crime in this case - he robbed a young woman of a normal life - therefore he deserves no life of freedom!!!

Disturbed
I am a believer of the neccessity of justice, yet when it is beyond excessive, it hurts the cause of justice. To sentence a man to life for such a crime is beyond crazy. Murderers are rarely sentenced to 103 years. I can't quantify the amount of time that is right, yet I know excessive when I see it and 103 years...

the sentencing is Hynes proving that he is cracking down
if he is guilty it is inexcusable
but what we shouold all be petrified of is also the sentencing itself
this is the same system that allows murderers to get a few measly years and others sentences for their life
many times based on what point they are trying to prove or which stand they are trying to take
the sentence is excessive for the court of law
and in any case jail time is not the way Torah set out to take care of things
either the ability of individuals in the court systems to put people away for life with a few short words should be very scary to all of us and shameful for them
every sentencing judge should be required to sit in jail for a year so they can think twice before they sentence others

how about attempted murder
Even if 103 years is too much for this one case. He is now going to pay for what he didn't get for attempted murder on Reb Pinyah Korf, and what a hasgocha protis that it came on yud alef shvat. The message is clear the Rebbe takes care of his chassidim.

to #4 and the victim
Clearly, fear of G-d was not enough. Let us hope that by the time he gets out he is either incapable of repeating those awful actions or has enough fear of the authorities of this world so that he won't recommit.

To the young lady involved...we each wish you and this jerk's other victims a full complete and speedy recovery from these horrible incidents. (Sorry, I don't know what word to use.) You've shown that you have the strength, remember that when things get rough.

dismayed
Before I get to my main point, he was the one who shaved off Rabbi Korf's beard?

I am disheartened by the state of justice in this country. If the alleged acts occurred, that's horrible and justice should be served, but 103 years is beyond excessive. I can't recall a murder who ever had such a long sentence.

i think he definitely deserves his fair share of time in jail but what i don't understand is how there are stories in the news of murder and those people go to jail maybe for 30 years..not life!!!!!!!!!! how is murder worse then this? if anything they are equal!

Finally some justice. I would say it pains me to see a jew facing such a sentence but he hardly acted like a jew abusing not only single girls but married women as well. He abused the Torah to mess with peoples heads. Evil!

Justice was served
It makes sense that he was involved in the beard incident - he comes from a Malochim family and it was the Malochim-turned-Satmar who were the ringleaders of the torment against Chabad at the time. (Had Reb Yoilish been physically well and in real control, these hooligans would have been in cherem and then some - they were fringe elements to begin with.)

Regardless of Weberman's past, 103 years is just fine for his present offenses.

but you are misleading and fooling yourself..

If he is really guilty ,were this my daughter I would be furious...I would want to tear him into pieces...If not stopped I probably might.
However, it's 'Hashgacha Pratis' for whatever reason. Also, after I calmed down (About 10 years later...joke)
There is much written about imprisonment, which has no place in 'Torah' and is a cruel system.
Some say 'Satmar' is so restricted that it creates this type of behavior...forget not that there are 'Lubavitchers' who seem guilty of this.
The 'yetzer hara' doesn't wear a 'Streimel.'

facts
he got all the years because he had a massive count number, 52 i believe.....not because he was jewish, this is how sentencing works ACCORDING TO THE LAW! each count carries a certain number of years as punishment, DUH!

although the press did have a field day with this, no denying that but they should have! the days of taking these cases and throwing them under the rug ruins innocent jewish lives and leaves even more scars when a victim sees his or her family not give a hoot.

Sociopath
There is a difference between non-premeditated murder & systematic abuse as was the case with Weberman. I think it is entirely possible for some murderers to be rehabilitated, but for a man like Weberman, it's highly unlikely rehabilitation would work, especially if he's a sociopath. In any event, he won't last a fraction of the time he's been sentenced in jail (child molesters are particularly unloved in prison). Hopefully, his sentencing & demise will deter other molesters in the Jewish community.

I had it confirmed. He spent a long time @ the Ohel asking the Rebbe for Mechila after Reb Pinye told him the Rebbe is the one to beg mechila from.

Nasty story. If he's guilty he deserves every day of the sentence and so does every pervert who preys on his (or her!!) victims. Maybe this will get sickos to seek help to control their urges, but I fear not. They never think they'll get caught.
(1/22/2013 2:14:55 PM)
36
first of all
Didnt the man repent and go to the Ohel and ask for forgiveness? Im just saying I read in an article that he did and besides think about this...murderers get less time. Personally I think pedophiles should get way more than 10 yrs but look at the cases in general. None of them get 103 yrs and priests for sure didn't get that.I hate pedophiles as much as anyone else and I believe he is guilty BUT something bothers me about the 103 yrs.It really bothers me only bec after looking at the judicial system, this is way over the top.But continue researching the beard case.he was there supposedly but did repent afterwards.

Re: to all the haters
The fact that Sandusky got 30 years is a disgrace to the "Justice" system. We should be outraged that he did not get more time, not that Weberanimalnotman got what he got. If you think that time is too much, you do not understand what abuse does not only to the victim, but to the victims family, and community!!!

Mixed Feelings
On one hand, I hear those who think that 103 yrs is a bit excessive, and I know next to nothing about the legal justice system and don't have an opinion. On the other, I think that there is room to make an example of someone, especially in this crime where the perpetrators are relying on the fact that they will not be prosecuted.
(1/22/2013 3:01:42 PM)
45
Abuse Victim
If in fact guilty (only Hashem knows for sure, humans must try to investigate) he deserves harsh punishment & deterrent for others...however NOT 103 years!!!! That's probably more befitting of murderer to say the least. Thankfully the girl who has suffered terribly at least in this case is now happily married and though forever marred has done the best she could to rebuild her life. I'd say even 20 years a lot for this crime & I can speak.

@41
Back in 1984 a group of Satmar yungermen in Williamsburg were furious that, at invitation, Rabbi Pinchas Korf was secretly teaching Tanya to Satmar men. Weberman was part of a group that accosted Rabbi Korf & to punish him, cut off his beard. The perpetrators had no idea what would befall them...#37 has his facts right about what happened to the group who did it. Obviously, Weberman was a sick individual, as is anyone who resorts to physical violence. It's only a tragedy that in order to see justice for his involvement in 1984 he had to ruin a girl's life. Sadly, he's not the only one in the frum veldt who molests & rapes. I hope he's the last.

Justice Used as a weapon against Jews
Let's be real, at least with ourselves. Notwithstanding the need to punish crimes adequately, there is a very disturbing trend here to use much harsher sentences against religious Jews than any other single group in the United States. We've seen this increasingly in the past few years in many well known cases. This is JUST as distorted as the crimes themselves. If this is allowed to continue it can only result in Jews eventually being convicted of crimes they did not commit r''l.. and so on.
Comments like #46 betray a naive perception of justice in America today.

And 103 years not even the Times square bomber got that much!
(1/22/2013 4:00:33 PM)
53
Think about it
He consistently molested young girls, over & over. Pre meditated. He picked & groomed vulnerable girls who did not come from the 'top families,' and told them they would never be believed. Read what Rabbi Yaakov Horowitz says about other victims who have come to him but are too terrified to testify. BH this brave girl had the guts to come forward and go through the torture of reliving the abuse, so others should be spared a similar fate. She needs all the support we can give her. Weberman deserves all the punishment he gets for his cruelty and unhumane actions to these innocent young girls. Unbelievable that he was involved in the 'Korf' affair - but just shows his true character - an evil, evil man.
(1/22/2013 4:05:13 PM)
54
EVEN IF HE DID IT
THE PUNISHMENT MUST FIT THE CRIME, JUST LIKE PEOPLE SCREAM WHEN SOMEONE GETS TO LIGHT OF A PUNISHMENT SO TO YOU NEED TO PROTEST THE PUNISHMENT IS TO EXTREME.

I PERSONALLY THINK HE IS GUILTY, BUT MURDERERS USUALLY DON'T GET THIS MANY YEARS.

YES THE GIRL MAY BE DAMAGED BUT SHE IS NOT DEAD, SHE SUFFERED BUT IM SURE SHE WILL OVERCOME IT.

Imprisonment YES - Life - NO!!!!!!
The justice is scapegoating this rabbi. He surely did not kill the girl. She is affected with emotional scars for many years, but with counselling and friendships, she will and can overcome to become a normal loving wife / mother. The guy should have gotten 25 years or less. Life we give to murderers, blood cold rapists... A Yid is capable of doing tshuva even when he gets out at 80 yrs old...Ditto for Bernie Madoff. Not Ditto for Pollard and Rubashkin, who don't even deserve 10 years. It's upside down the whole stinking system.

64
Crazy
While I disagree with the people who claim that he is innocent, I am so much more disgusted at the people who think that even if he may be guilty that his sentence is excessive. This man *should* spend the rest of his life rotting away in jail for destroying this girl's life, plus the lives of all the other victims who never came forward because they were scared and ashamed. This is a man that admitted to buying lingerie with the money donated to his charity. He took this girl on a 10 hour trip in the car, alone with her - he admitted to this. The Torah gives us safeguards like yichud for a reason, and this man completely disregarded them, so why wouldn't he take advantage of a vulnerable girl? Just because of his clothes? His public persona? Pedophiles are wolves in sheep's clothing. They don't dress creepy and publicly misbehave, giving themselves away. They are the epitome of proper behavior and menchelachkeit so they aren't suspect. He deserves to be put away forever so he can never harm another innocent again.

These comments make me sick...
Think about it for one minute if it was YOUR Daughter who suffered under his attack? A lifetime will not be enough for her to recover. Think about how much therapy, how much help she will need to overcome not only the actual incidents but the fact that this was a person her school and her parents and her community trusted. Imagine how it's going to affect her marriage, her children? For one second, think of what it was on her life. You think her testimony was not enough? If you hear your son or daughter come and tell you the same story, you're going to say well good make-believe? I mean you all are ridiculous, you think she hasn't been seen by therapists and court psychologists to assess her testimony as valid? And she wasn't the only one, she was just the one who actually spoke out, maybe because we're proving by your comments that people don't believe the abused and aren't willing to condemn the abuser.

And you think the sentence was harsh? Please, if it wasn't life he would just do it again. Pedophiles and Rapists deserve to sit in prison. And this should be the way it is for everyone.
(1/22/2013 6:50:34 PM)
70
Pedophilia can't be cured
They can only be kept away from children and the temptation. The recidivism rate among these offenders is very high. He used power against the innocent, he damaged her life, he took thousands of dollars from her parents, he made a chillul hashem. And yes, a picture is needed. He doesn't get the luxury of privacy. Of course his family is mortified.
(1/22/2013 6:53:19 PM)
71
Murder and molestation
I think murderers and molesters deserve the exact same sentence! Every murderer should get life imprisonment and every molester should get life imprisonment. If te justice system for some reason only gives a 30 year sentence to one of them well then THAT is the problem. He should have gotten life! Who are all you people to judge and say this is excessive punishment anyway?!

to # 70 & #71
# 70. you obviously know nothing about being molested, Most children that are molested at a certain age will have the urge to repeat that to others of the age that he/she was abused. so are you saying every child who is abused should be locked up for life because they have the urge? NO that is why they need therapy, but at the same time nothing is guaranteed but we still let them free on the street the same goes with offenders, most people who abused who got help and stayed away from children did not repeat abusing children

Its the ones that do not get help that hang our kids that we need to watch out from and that is why its so important for victims to seek help otherwise there is a 99% chance they will abuse others.

# 71 if that is the case abusers will start killing their victims, and ask any victim of abuse there may be a time in life when they feel like they are dead but most victims go on and have beautiful life's where when someone is killed they obviously cannot do that.

(1/22/2013 7:12:59 PM)

The goyim are definitely following the lesson from Torah here.
To all those who are saying that the sentence is excessive, remember the Torah's story with Dinah. When they dared defile Dinah, her brothers knew how to respond. Would some say they responded excessively? Yes. But they knew otherwise, and that's the example we have. HA'KEZONAH YAASEH ES ACHOSEINU! And that was even for one Yiddishe meidel, especially in this case, when the creep had multiple victims.

HOW PAINFULLY EMBARASSING to be a Jew, stand for Torah and have this sickness call himself a Jew and dress like a frum person. How utterly disgusting. The public won't stand for this any longer, it is going to be a much harder punishment for these evil-sick-os.
It is like a murder, and just as bad because the victim has sustained pain and suffering that they must live with. Horrific. We must watch our children, they are the ones carrying the potential of Geula, they are our gems.
And they say she was wayward? That is the result of the insular style of their community to not accept and deal in a healthy manner with a normal kid who is just feeling their humanity and needs to express it. Let them be frum, but give them SOME expression. Its just not normal to not allow kids to play ball, have some competition, draw, paint, create.......
He "killed" his family too. What is that community thinking to protect him? They don't protect the children?? That is pure choshech, that is purely sick. They need to re-evaluate their system in a serious way.

question
as many of you know frum communities so tend to shield and look the other way when molestation takes place. Or this is what I've been told numerous times. Finally something was brought out in the open and think of this.Do u honestly think a girl would go infront of the world and expose herself and her family in this way just to get back at someone?I don't think so.I DO believe her. She's married and her husband is standing by her as is her family bec even now so many refuse to hear the cries of her and the cries of many children who discarded and left like discarded goods. That is the real tragedy in abuse cases.Have some rochmones on them and not the perp.Did the perp care about his own family?NOOOO!

sickening
as a lubavitcher, I feel it's sickening that some commenters are gloating that he got life after cutting korf's beard. He was a pisher at the time. 26 years of age. A major kanoii. Essentially he was a tzfati with langeh payos. Would you say a tzfati deserves life? Of course not! For his sin regarding Korf he needs teshuvah and perhaps a beating. No more. For his alleged molestation crimes he deserves to serve a few, but not life!!!

Your right that most pedophiles come from being abused as children..
BUT they only become a pedophile once they do it, and once they do- it becomes engrained in them, and very very hard to get cured.

He deserves the sentence
The number 105 is to get peoples attention, It is saying NO MORE! It sets an example for others that commit such horrible abuse to our children who are our future generation. It could have well been 35 or 45 years. The man probably wont live that long anyway. Baruch Hashem,
The system worked this time, And nobody should give kibbud to this man by calling him a Rav. He is not a RAV! Ravs are not pedophiles. They are examples for us.

Seriously?
Do you people even follow the case? You are complaining about 103 years as if it was an arbitrary amount picked by the judge. Anyone with even a little knowledge of the legal system would know that the sentence is based on the count of charges brought against the accused. In this case, there were 59 counts.
Honestly, I think it is more of a chilul Hashem to defend this guy. It makes you sound like we think that as Jews we are above the law and can to whatever we want, be it tax evasion or something worse. Crying antisemitism at every court ruling you don't like decreases your credibility and respectability.

Don't worry. No one thinks you are perfect. Making an 'example' of Jews by giving them way more 'justice' than anyone else who committed the same major crime is a disturbing trend these days and does not indicate a change for the better. It is a sneaky form of anti-semitism that has nothing to do with a judge or jury's support of a victim. If it's not nipped in the bud, Jews in the future may be getting much worse even without adequate evidence to incriminate them. There's a big issue out there that has been arising more and more in the past few years that you are blind to because you are going by your feelings instead of your intellect.

What about the victim?
Did he ask mechillah from the victime? No! He still denies his
crimes! Not only that but the whole community is denying them
too! Instead of feeling guilty that this yiddishe neshoma went
off the derech because of their distorted version of chinuch,
they torture her and her family. Weberman's sentencing is
going to put some people in their place in the Satmar kehilla
and hopefully the next time one of their "Rabonim" speaks
publicly he won't speak lashon horah about the victim and
cover up for the villain. Yes, Hynes is doing a little too late
for the past victims of molestation in Williamsburg and other
Chassidishe communitites. Perhaps this will prevent future
neshomas from being destroyed. If you really want to know
all the details of Weberman's crimes, read Rabbi Yaakov

You need to wake up. There is horrid child ... abuse in the jewish community. BH hashem saved you from the horror of knowing the pain, that gives no license to judge others. or to say that he didn't deserve the 103 years.

I agree. What is with the ellipses in this article? The fact that our chassidic community won't even write certain words in the context of abuse is one of the fundamental issues. We need to be open about this and spread awareness of this type of abuse as a preventative measure so we stop these horrible horrible things from happening! All of this hush hush and these ellipses enable these issues in our communty and don't let victims know they don't need to be embarrassed and will have the courage to speak up. I'd rather a "pritzusdike" word be used in an unpritzusdike context be used out in the open, so that these issues not be overshadowed and ignored.

He opens a website about Frum Jews, posting those "who defraud Medicaid".
He again calls Hynes to a Shul in Crown Heights..............................................................
.......................

Next they will find a Jew who (for example) did not report a large gift that they received that made them ineligible for medicaid anymore!!
Each time they visited the doctor with this medicaid is another count of "Financial Fraud", "Defrauding the government", "Lying to the government" etc.
A Jury will convict them of 59 counts of fraud and there goes 27-103 years in Jail.

(The same about rentals, sales etc.)

It's all the same, a Jew serving 27-103 years in prison for what vast majority of people go out free of anything.

Regarding the suggestion that this individual was involved in cutting off R' Pinye's beard, I just remembered the following:

In the sicha that the Rebbe spoke after that incident (printed in the hosafos of likutei sichos chelek 23), the Rebbe mentioned - seemingly parenthetically - that these so-called kanoim were guilty of "chilel briso", something that seemed hard to understand at the time, but seems prophetic now.

What does the TORAH say?
Terrible! He raped an unmarried minor, so we jump on the bandwagon and say "let him rot!" Maybe he deserves it, according to the law of the land.
But, correct me if I'm missing something. Doesn't the Torah require the rapist to just pay a fine and even marry her? So, when the law of the land and the Torah contradict, which one do we go by?
Case in point. Let's say we live in an Arab country, where the penalty for theft is be-handing. Are we going to insist that our brother thief lose his hand or go according to the Torah?

Imagine Dovid Hamelech and Avishag Hshunamies these days.
Dovid Hamelech never even married the Girl, the girl just sat on his lap.

These days I also support throwing a molestor into prison (-not for life-) because he is ruining the child for life, and he may go after others.
But don't blame Torah..

Gemara and Shulchan Aruch never mention "child molostation" as a prohibited adultry (unless it goes into other categories such as man with man etc.)

Chumash requires the molster to marry the victim for life.

Even a Shifcha Charufa (brought in Gemara) who gets lashed when committing adultery with a nine year old boy, she gets the same punishment if for committing adultery with an adult.

Fast forward to the modern day, and the family can afford to help the victim and there are institutions to help, a victim is not seen as some leper etc. . No repeat offender. Problem arises when you don't apprehend the rapist, or get the wrong guy.

That's irrelevant. Each one of them is a crime and a violation of someone's rights and body. Whether someone is abducted, beard shaved and thrown out of a moving vehicle onto the street, or someone is molested it's a crime. No need to compare. The only comparison hear is to point out the violent tendencies of the offender which goes back many years to a well known story

Is 103 years excessive
The number is ridiculous, what on Earth does that mean? Give him life with a chance of parole in 25 years. That's what we usually do in Canada. A man his age in 25 years he would repent and learn his lesson if he makes it that long. and in 25 years parole board will decide if he should remain in jail or not.
No excuse for his crime.

this is abuse not seduction, how would we be if we support a world filled with abusive men, and abusive relationships, lets look at what we are proposing for a Jewish family life. How are we proposing to raise a beautiful generation of Happy Loving People, if we are not recognizing abuse in or out of marriage.

To all who say its excessive
1) If a person commits 2 crimes, should they get a break and get the same as a person who committed one crime?
2) People believe that a person would repent and do teshuva. How are you so sure of this? Just because you'd learn your lesson, doesnt mean the monster would learn his lesson.

The young girl is going to have to live with this for the rest of her life, but I still dont think he should of got life in prison, there are plenty of men in prison now doing what he did and they did not get as much time as he did, I never heard of a person getting life in prison for doing what he did, people that kill other people they dont get as much time as he did, by the time the parole board looks at his case he might not be around anymore
