“In a place where there are no men, strive to be a man.”
Full page advertisements in New York area Jewish newspapers this past week have announced of one appliance store that “refuses to profit from your catastrophe.”
Drimmer’s Appliances in Brooklyn, NY, notified of the opening of a division called H.E.A.R.T. (Hurricane Emergency Appliance Replacement Team) in response to Superstorm Sandy.
“If your washer and/or dryer were damaged by Hurricane Sandy, Drimmer’s Appliances will replace washers and dryers at dealer’s cost,” read the ad.
The generous move has received wide-spread praise from relief workers and residents whose homes and properties have been wrecked by the massive storm that hit Mid-Atlantic states.
“Many of our customers’ belongings were almost completely wiped away,” said Shlomo Drimmer, owner of Drimmer’s located at 1608 Coney Island Avenue.
“It was heartbreaking to hear the stories of people who lost everything. And this isn’t only those who have less, it also affected the affluent,” said the Crown Heights resident.
Drimmer said he felt that doing something to help was an obligation.
“The least we can do is to replace the basic appliances that were lost,” he says. “We thought it was the right thing to do, and we are hoping that some of the manufacturers and other stores might also do the same.”
He said he was inspired by the Jewish organizations, such as Achiezer, and the many individual volunteers who stepped up to the plate, while the Red Cross and others dragged their feet.
“There were non-Jews who were in need and they met the Jewish volunteers with food. They were saying, ‘Thank G-d for the Jews, otherwise we would starve.'”
At their own cost, Drimmer’s Appliances is offering to get those in need up and running. Purchase must be made by December 31, 2012 even if delivery is made at a later date. (All manufacturer rebates are still in effect. Plus delivery and installation if applicable.)
