Is it Sandy’s fault?
Many lives were affected by last week’s hurricane, continued with tonight’s snowstorm in New York, and a low rate of engagements in the Chabad community may be one of the results.
Traditionally, the week of the Kinus Hashluchim convention in Crown Heights is when simcha halls are fully booked. Caterers, florists and the liquor stores have their hands full.
Utilizing a time when thousands fly in from around the world, Chabad boys and girls timed their engagement announcement for this week, hoping to hold a L’chaim party when guests are already in town.
At times, there were up to 6 L’chaims taking place at the same night in different locations. But not this year.
Reviewing the COLlive Events Calendar, we found the following statistics from the week of kinus:
5769: 6 l’chaims
5770: 11 l’chaims
5771: 17 l’chaims
5772: 19 l’chaims
5773: only 2 l’chaims so far
So basically I should propose tomorrow????
And we got married chaf gimmel cheshvan- beautiful time for a chuppah and Sheva brachos over the kinnus!
Explain what’s the idea..
It makes older ppl (like me) that are not engaged f or married)
Uncomfortable!
Um shidduch crisis..duh.
To #15, I highly doubt people actually wait for the kinus. One shidduch which is soon to be finalized iyh just happened–b’hasgocha protis–to work out to conclude just now.
To #16, the banquet is over not too late–it starts at 5
No one should make lichayim Sunday night, its the night of the banquet.
There is no excuse for Waiting to anounce engagement Just beacuse that’s when parents will be there and convenient etc. as soon as they know they should tell the Rebbe, then if they want to wait for the party that’s something else. Just an observation.
Live and let live. Since when do we count engagements? Please some positive and hopeful newsfeeds… I’m sure the engagements will show
There’s more to come!!! Can’t wait!!!
We still have tonite, Motzei Shabbos and Sunday nite- tracht gut vet zein gut!!!IY”H
1. people stopped making the lchaims in halls, and just do as they should – make a lchaim in their home for close friends
2. people make parties and not the standardized lchaims
3. do an analysis covering a greater time span than one weekend.
i just got word…there are 3 engagements not final yet, rest assured!! (you will find out tomorrow who they are and you’ll be very excited!)
It is only Wednesday. They will start popping!
For sure
Perhaps G-d runs the world…wouldn’t you say?
we got engaged this weekend, 15 years ago….
if a name comes up to some one and they dont realy know about him or her .you end up using your imagination, and for some reason people just imagin why that person is not good for them .i see this happening a lot . people saying things about people just from seeing them in streets or events or maybe one reference call or one time i over heard someone judge some one from a facebook pic and imaging what that person is , and i knew that person, and they got it wrong. so what im saying is we… Read more »
When I first saw the headline, I was very taken aback. How can this be possible? How can we be so naive?
I personally know many people who “timed” their engagement announcements for this time but are unable to do so due to the weather.
There are a lot of halls that are booked and maybe you got the statistics wrong. I would check again and hope for the best.
I’m sick and tired of blaming Sandy for everything. It is high time we take responsibility for a culture we built ourselves, as a community.
The truth is, this is because Obama won the election. Who wants to start a family in a world of such uncertainty; when we don’t know if Iran will destroy us; when we are afraid Social Security is doomed; when the president fails to prevent natural disasters.
Also, I know some people named Sandy, and they would love to make Lechaims.
There are a bunch of lchaims booked for thursday and motzei shabbos
Bc in 5769 not everyone put their lchaim a on col- less Internet use and col wasnt as popular then…
