The gas shortage is certainly bringing about the creative spirit among New Yorkers.
With gas scarce these past few days, many Crown Heights residents could be seen doing their erev Shabbos errands by foot.
Crown Heights local Schneur Minsky was seen driving, but it was a small electric powered golf cart.
On Friday afternoon, an individual with an entrepreneurial spirit parked on President Street and Kingston Avenue to sell gas to those desperate enough to spend $20 per gallon.
“The police soon showed up,” a passerby told COLlive. “R’ Yisroel Shemtov was there, and he offered them to buy gas too.”
In the days before Hurricane Sandy was expected, NY Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman issued an open letter to vendors in areas forecast to be affected by Hurricane Sandy to warn against price gouging, the inflation of the price of necessary goods and services.
It’s freedom.
Don’t want to pay $20? Wait in line or walk. Want to pay $20? It’s your money.
Want to make $20? Well, maybe charge $18, to compete with the $20 truck.
That is how freedom and capitalism work.
I know I know… the “subjects” in New York don’t really understand that….
Both selling gas without a proper license and overcharging under the current situation violate the law. I am surprised the sellers would publicly tout these violations. \]
Wait 5 hours at $4 gallon and 10 gallon max per car.
Or buy at $20 delivered to my car. can pay a taxi double fare. Or have vip service. Its America and ur choice. pay with your time or pocket ! Its like parking ur car by the 25 cents meter or $35 valet.
I’m sure there is a halacha about such a situation!
now everyone can feel what it feels like not to own a car and walk EVERYWHERE, even MTA involves allot of walking, Crown heights needs help each other and give people rides
thanks so much for bringing in and selling the gas, you guys are amazing, it really helped me out, its worth every bit of $20 per gallon.
continue selling !!!!!
Just dont be lazy and walk or take MTA i did nottake my car out yet i just take mta for now
They certainly will end up being prosecuted for price gouging. Whatever their overhead I can’t begin to imagine it costs anywhere close to that.
This is a time to help each other — not make money off others’ misery.
As for those complaining about price, instead of showing your ignorance, perhaps you should study some basic economics 101 it will help you appreciate the beauty of our holy torah
i would happily pay $20 for gas, can someone let us know if its still available
seriously its not taking advantage, u want gas pay the price or wait online, or wait a few days!
agree with #2 and #17 at least. If I was related to him, I would be VERY EMBARASSED. for a few dollars, he would be better off to use his midos and do what Chabad is doing. This is not the Jewish way…of course if he was really POOR and in a horrible situation chasvesholom, then it would be ok but I tend to think that he could better use his midos muscles to be exercised. This is a shameful thing, really
Thanks to them my husband went to work tonight. Yasher koach.
This is the most embarrassing thing I’ve ever seen. People taking advantage of others misfortunes. this is not a regular situation this is a natural disaster you should be ashamed.
Leibel Hackner!!
who is paying $20 the gallon? come on
you go to any gast station, talk to the guy of the pump, and for $ 20 tip, you fill the tank
I hope Reb Yisrulik got gas with at least a cup of Benedictine per gallon at that price!
What a good deal these guys drive 8 hours to bring it and make some money
My neighbor waited 6 hours today and got but do you really wanna wait!!!!!
i dont live in new york and i can drive everywhere
nothing is walking distance like new york
Let them sell it at whatever price they want! No one is forced to buy from them. If not for the silly rule against “price gouging,” we wouldn’t be in this mess of mile long lines at the gas stations.
If you allow the gas to sell for its real price (based prely on demand) like $20 a gallon, then it will encourage other entrepreneurs to find creative ways to bring gas to your neighborhood. which will be a great service to the community AND will bring the price back down. the greater the supply vs the demand the lower the price.
Good for them.
I would like to thank this entrepreneur he made my life allot easier today at least I am not stressing all shabbos long that I won’t be able to get to work on Sunday it was worth every cent.
You guys are the best
ITS NOT ISRAELIS BEHIND THIS! I KNOW WHO IT IS. AND ITS REAL GAS! GO GUYS GO!
not entrepreneurial rather despicable to take advantage of people like that
BTW- It’s Israelis behind this business! Goodf for them and Americans take note- these guys are great businessman.
I am not trying to laugh at people’s problems. But for local trips why not USE a bike. Plenty of those in CH and people sure can use the exercise.
you dont know the quality of the gas…or is it really gas.
One doesn’t know if this is ‘price gouging’ or not. What was the sellers overhead? Who is he. Perhaps most buyer only needed a few gallons to get to a gas station when the situation, BE”H, changes?
More like bloodsucking spirit.
