Rabbi Ezra Schochet, Rosh Yeshiva of Ohr Elchonon Chabad in Los Angeles and widely regarded as one of the greatest Torah scholars of our generation, got up on the podium at the annual Melave Malka of the Yarchei Kallah summit and decided to spare no words.
He began with an apology to his fellow respected colleagues – rabbonim, roshei yeshiva and mashpiim – that he wouldn’t be speaking in Yiddish. Instead, his remarks in English would be addressed to the bochurim present.
“You have to let yourself get involved; not cut yourself off,” he implored, saying that learning Torah provides a connection, “so I have some kind of feeling of who I am, and what I am. I start feeling who I really am.”
The beloved teacher simply known as “The Rosh,” went on to say, “when one gets involved in learning, and tries to start listening to understand the shiurim, you will not only have the feeling of sanctification, but even more, It will transform you to finally start being what you first intended to be,” he said.
“You will get out of all your problems; all your schizophrenia, you will be able to finally be what Hashem wanted you to be.”
His speech that ended with a round of applause, has brought the 4-day Torah gathering held in Camp Gan Israel in Parksville, NY, to its end.
From late Wednesday to early Sunday, some 40 rabbis have filled their time with learning and some discussion over the state of Chabad Yeshivos and communities.
The Global Yarchei Kallah was established in 5734 to honor the yartzeit of the Rebbe’s father Reb Levi Yitzchok Schneerson OBM and is hosted by Rabbi Abraham Shemtov, head of the camp and Chairman of Agudas Chassidei Chabad International.
During his speech at the Melave Malka -which many look forward to, coming from the surrounding bungalow colonies in the Catskills- Rabbi Shemtov addressed pressing matters of how the frum world should face the challenge of secular influences and the Internet.
(The full speech will be posted on COLlive.com later this week)
Emcee of the evening was Rabbi Zalman Wilschansky, Rosh Yeshiva Tomchei Tmimim in Morristown, NJ. Delivering the opening Dvar Malchus was Rabbi Yoel Kahan, the Rebbe’s choizer.
Blessings were offered by Kfar Chabad Rabbi Mordechai Shmuel Ashkenazi speaking on behalf of Beis Din Chabad in Israel. Rabbi Schochet represented Vaad Rabbonei Lubavitch at the evening.
It came after a truly inspirational Shabbos for the rabbonim and the campers and staff alike. On Friday night and Shabbos morning, the talmidei chachomim davened together with the children, both demonstrating to each other how to daven with zest and fervor.
The many Farbrengens over Shabbos had staff members and visiting bochurim gathered around to get a glimpse and hear a unique story or a lesson that would put them back into the setting of the Yeshiva as the summer ends.
Additional speakers at the Melave Malka, which attracted participants from other groups such as Skver and Bobuv, were Rabbi Yosef Tzvi Segal, Rosh Kollel Tzemach Tzedek in Yerushalayim and Rabbi Mordechai Avtzon, the Hong Kong-based Head Shliach to Asia who shed light on Shlichus life in the Far East.
Special thanks was given to camp director Rabbi Yossi Futerfas and his brother Rabbi Shloimy Futerfas and the dedicated staff of the camp for their hospitality.
A thank you also went to the Yarchei Kallah coordinator Rabbi Yehuda Ceitlin, a Shliach in Tucson, AZ, and those who assisted – Boruch Ceitlin, Shmulik Goodman, Shmulik Kuperman, Mendy Bloy and Menachem Elgarten.
As fitting a Motzoei Shabbos setting, world renowned chazzan Yaakov Lemmer, accompanied by Benshimon, sang some Chabad niggunim and Yiddish classics which had many mesmerized by his powerful, yet sweet voice, sending off the crowd into a new week and the rabbonim back to their yeshivos and communities preparing for the new year.

If that is the case, given the amount of yeshivas, and the fact that there is not one yeshiva only for metzuionim, it is a given that most of the yeshivas will get most of the students from the’ other 999, so makes sense to take care of them. As well as of the special one. And those special ones should be nurture
Well kept secret – Rabbi Asher Farkash in Argentina
Perhaps the RY are not able to relate to bochurim and their needs, but the question is, are they at least open and addressing the issue – that indeed they dont have the answers! Then, they can allow othe people to get involved and help. This might mean adjusting the system so boys can learn at their level and what interests them. In this sense, the RY need to be more open minded and take responsibility.
The Rosh speaks The Truth. Many of us can’t handle the truth. We live a lie, we talk in lies, and everything we do is a lie. When we hear the truth, we go into shock, rage and a bit meshuge. The truth makes us uncomfortable and we feel threatened by it. The Rosh knows this, and he davka will say the truth simply to bug you and shake you into reality. Thank him for being what he is and trying to make your sons into real human human beings and not the façade that we expect.
Rabbi Lustig, is most amazing menhale, he really cares about the bachrim. and he gives the bachrim all that he has
Sadly, you are correct.
My son, also good boy, just not a big masmid, is chasing yeshiva after yeshiva, to no avail.
In many yeshivos RY’s have given the reigns to kid mashgichim who just got married, who have no idea what children are as they are children themselves, and the RY has freed himself from any hard work.
Rabbi Wagner (Toronto)is an outstanding ry. Who cares allot about the bochurim who are not as smart, and apparently the rosh is also
Many people, many opinions.
I’m with #1.
There’s no talking to or about bochurim by anyone anywhere without it requiring full frontal acceptance that what yeshivos offer today and what is necessary for today are two different worlds.
The fact that the “Rosh” spoke in English underlines this point. Unfortunately, the content (message) and not just the vehicle (language) needs change.
As a holy man once said about the general golus – perhaps 1/2/3 people will do what’s necessary.
Until then wave after wave of minds and energy will feel their way blindfolded.
You may as well direct your criticism at The Rebbe. It was He who spoke these words. The Rosh was merely delivering The Rebbe’s message from 51 years ago. Almost verbatim.
The criticism and cynicism is just proof that you have more work to do in your personal avodos. Chodesh Elul is almost upon us. A spiritual reckoning is in order.
Good luck at that…
The R.Y. brought the topic up so I think it is fair to talk about it.
I couldnt agree more
from a former la talmid
bs”d
the rosh!
everyone has pont and people in chinuch need to include everyone we all want to serve Hashem the right way and where can you learn to do that if not in yeshivah
It’s a fact… most of the bochurim who will graduate out of Yeshiva will either look for a rabbi position which is already saturated to the hilt… or will seek out a job in mashgiach or sofros, and if that’s not feasible, will scramble to find “any job”. I’m sorry, not ever bochur can reach the heights of heights of chassidus, and live it day to day without stepping in this low world of parnoso.
You do not know what you’re talking about. Of all people, the ROSH is one of the few people I know that really cares.
besides for the othyer comments, which were well written (numbers 2 and 3). im not sure if you know what the job of a rosh yeshiva is, it has nothing to do with phsycology, even if you do have complaints, its definitily not to the mishtatfim of yarchei kalla.
pshiiiiii!!!!!!!!!!
I know Love a fellow Jew is very hard. obviously this parent is hurting. And we know the system is not working the way we would like it. Rabbi Shochet is great, but some times its good to listen to a parent. Most RY have no clue what the parents want because most parents wont approach them as they feel…. Now is not the time to talk about any of these issues as THe yarchei Kalloh is what we should be talking about. It was very nice and the credit should go to R’ Yossi Futerfas for all his great… Read more »
more yeshivas like rabbi berger had in ottawa, ateres menachem, that was the best………
Never mind the speeches, can we get a video of Chazzan Lemmer? I heard he was awesome!
well said rabbi shochot as always
You are wrong, very wrong these yeshivos cater for a certain group of bochurim if there bochurim who are not fit for their yeshiva they should go elsewhere! dont send a bochur who wants to learn how to become a doctor to a yeshiva where they will teach him how to be a rabbi! blame the parents for not sending their children to the right school, you cant expect a school to change for the student and you say nobody cares?? thats why we have schools like rabbi O who do care and who do open schools for the students… Read more »
Dear Parent (whoever you are), you also want your kids to love and respect torah scholars, you’re dream would be that your kids would grow up one day and know as much torah as they do – so, at an event which is a celebration of torah scholarship ,can you please please leave your criticism behind ??? There are PLENTY of opportunities on col op-eds etc.etc.etc.,where we can all participate in the wonderful merry-go-round/hakofos of blaming the schools ,the teachers and the rosh yeshiva’s for the current crisis of the bochurim today… But P-U-L-E-E-Z ,can we just celebrate a kinus, sium or… Read more »
Very nice of the honorable RY to make this call….. The reality is that he together with most of the other RY’s are responsible for the steep decline and deteriation of our bochurim today. The RY’s are not interested in helping our kids grow; they want robots, and if not a ronbot, leave the Yeshiva… How many parents suffer in silence watching the imature, irresponsible and careless attitude hanhollas and RY’s have to our kids?! Find me 1 Rosh Yeshiva who has had the humility to take a course in teen phsycology? Show me 1 Rosh Yeshiva who CARES about… Read more »
