Shul Fills Missing Component
Friends of Nosson Deitsch OBM gathered on his birthday and decided to fill a missing component to his namesake shul. By COLlive staff
A shul founded by young Crown Heights residents in memory of a friend has turned into a living memory of a bochur who was known for his dedication to davening, learning and mivtzoim.
Nosson's Shul on Empire Blvd. was founded by classmates of 21 year-old Nosson Deitsch in the aftermath of his tragic passing 2 years ago.
The shul (not to be confused with the Oihel Nosson shul on Crown Street) quickly grew into a vibrant hub with regular minyonim, shuirim, farbrengens and one-on-one learning taking place on Shabbos and throughout the week.
While "Nosson's Shul" is housed in spacious and inviting premises, and boasts a fine stock of seforim, the shul has been missing one very important ingredient: A Torah of its own.
On Sivan 19, Deitsch's birthday, a group of his friends came to the conclusion that the time has come to write a Sefer Torah in his memory and a few days later, on the Thursday before Gimmel Tammuz, a large crowd of bochurim and yungerlite gathered to begin with the writing.
"The occasion aroused tremendous feelings," one of the organizers said. "The memory of Nosson, with his trademark smile, will always bring to mind good and happy times, and by the same token, is accompanied by a deep sense of loss."
In that spirit, the evening concluded with a farbrengen in honor of Gimmel Tammuz led by Rabbi Mendel Lipsker, Shliach to Sherman Oaks, CA.
