While the Kitzur Shulchan Aruch is universally accepted in the Jewish world, the burial site of its author is somewhat less known.
That is going to change thanks to Rabbi Mendel Teichman, the Chabad Shliach and Chief Rabbi of Uzhgorod, a city in western Ukraine.
In recent weeks, Teichman has completed the building of an “ohel” structure over the gravesite of Rabbi Shlomo Ganzfried OBM, the dayan of Ungvar (today Uzhgorod) who composed the abbreviated code of Jewish law.
Rabbi Ganzfried was born in 1804 in Uzhgorod and was considered to be a child prodigy. After serving as rabbi of Brezevitz, he returned to his hometown to help Chief Rabbi Meir Ash oppose the Neolog Reform Jews.
It was to that end that Rabbi Ganzfried composed the Kitzur Shulchan Aruch, stating that “the average Jew required an underpinning of knowledge of practical halacha.” This work became very popular, and was frequently reprinted in Hebrew and in Yiddish.
Yet Rabbi Ganzfried was not buried in the rabbis’ plot in the Uzhgorod Jewish cemetery.
The reason for that is, explained Rabbi Teichman, was the request in his will to be buried with his father R’ Yoseph Ganzfried who passed away when Shlomo was 8 years old.
The ohel was donated by American haredi philanthropist Avraham Melan with the encouragement of the askan R’ Kalman Weinberger.
It replaces a small structure built over the gravsite some 10 years ago by the Munkatcher Rebbe.
I was there in 2013. Thank you Avraham Melan, Rabbi Teichman et al, it means the world to me, and to many others, it is a true קידש השם, and you are a tzaddikim.
I need the address of the Beis Hachayim
How do I contact Rabbi Mendel Teichman
קידש השם
What was wrong with the structure built by the Munkatcher Rebbe?
The big matzeiva in that picture is of the Maharam Ash (the Imrei Eish), who was the rov there before him, and the other two must be other rabbonim of Ungvar who are buried in the rabbonim chelka. As the article states, the Kitzur wasn’t buried there because he wanted to be near his father.

Good job Aron keeping the flame burning in Ukraine.

The meteviahs are not the same as the close up. Who else is buried there – perhaps more family ?
