Oholei Torah pays tribute to a dear friend, supporter and a Member of the Executive Board.
As today, 9th of Teves, marks the end of Shiva for Rabbi Hirshel Chitrik obm, Oholei Torah presents a gallery of pictures spanning over 50 years of Rabbi Chitrik’s involvement with the Moisad.
Rabbi Chitrik was a dear friend and a Board Member of Oholei Torah. He was the key player in the partnership between the former Brooklyn Jewish Center and Oholei Torah in 1971, which eventually lead to the sale of the building to the school in 1982. Today, more than 40 years later the BJC edifice is the anchor building for the Oholei Torah Eastern Parkway Campus
As is now known, Rabbi Chitrik accomplished many missions given to him by the Rebbe, of which the sale of the Jewish Center was one of them. This shlichus directly benefitted Oholei Torah, and the entire Crown Heights Community. One of the very first benefits for the community, was the Jewish Center Wedding hall, which gave the opportunity to the Lubavitch chassidim to make their weddings in Crown Heights, as per directive of the Rebbe.
The pictures are courtesy of the Oholei Torah archive office.
יהי זכרו ברוך והחיי יתן אל ליבו
In Shulchan Aruch it says that children should not stop learning to attend a Levaya.
He was not just a member of the board, he got the building. He suffered Bizyonos, as he became a member of the conservative organization and gave classes and Shiurim there, all because the Rebbe told him to make sure to do what he can to get the building, and not to tell anyone that it came from the Rebbe. Even Rabbi Hodakov shamed him in public for becoming a member there – but he did not tell Hodakov that it was the Rebbe who told him to do what he can. He got the building, and the wedding hall… Read more »
I am sure Rabbi Chitrik did many good things but to dismiss school to attend a funeral does not make sense to me. Rabbi Chitrik was a member of the Board, helped, supported and even was involved in getting the building, but to say the school should be dismissed < does not make sense at all, perhaps for Rabbi Teitelbaum who was the founder, and gave his whole life, I understand,,,,, but for every Member of the Board?, I am sorry//// no sense at all
I heard the Rebbe asked Reb Hirschel that he should pay for the BJC newsletters when they stopped printing because of money! Who knows what else the Rebbe asked of Reb Hirchel to do and pay, we will never really know all his secrets, but one thing is for sure, He merited to do many things for the Rebbe, for Oholei Torah and for Lubavitch in general,,,,, He left a Legacy of Ma’asim Tovim!
You were not mevatel torah, Oholei Torah is not a rent-a -crowd, and it was the right choice that the talmidim should sit and learn, the fact that they are making a siyum mishnyaus, seems to em a greater Kovod then attending a levayeh.
Rabbi Chitrik was a wealthy aristrocrat, but lived and conducted his life in a simple and easy manner.
We are not talking about what Reb Hirsh wanted.
We are talking about what Oholei Torah should have done.
Reb Hirsch AH did not seek attention and kovod. Perhaps he himself would not have wanted a huge turnout of young children at his levaya.
Totally disagree.
There is something called, showing respect for the Niftar.
When Reb Michael Teitelbaum passed away, the whole Ohlei Torah came to the levaya. Would you make the same Cheshbon.
Pay respect where respect is due.
I was told that amongst the whole student body they will be learning the whole shas mishnayos Baal Peh in his zchus
Dear comment #1, you are absolutely right.
HOWEVER, some things are better said and not written.
This should have been noted to the Hanhola of the Yeshiva.
Even though “as a kop ken men nisht aroyf shtelen”.
And dear comment #2, your terretz is worse than the question.
This video has an important message for all

What with teaching the kids about giving gratitude and Halvoyas Hames ? That’s not important ???
I do not understand, to be Mevatel Torah, which was the whole purpose of Rabbi Chitrik’s shlichus to get the building, would not have been a honor for him. The fact that there are yiddeshe kinderlach, learning torah is in itself the greatest kovod for the niftar, being he had such a great zechus in helping Oholei Torah get teh building!
חבל מאוד שמוסד חשוב זה, שהרב חיטריק הוזיל מדמו (-תרתי משמע) לא טרח לשלוח אפילו כיתה אחת להלוויתו…
🙁
