US President Barack Obama on Wednesday rejected Palestinian plans to seek UN recognition for statehood and urged a return to peace talks with Israel as he tried to head off a looming diplomatic disaster.
Addressing world leaders at the opening of the UN General Assembly, Obama said that the Palestinians deserved a state of their own, but that this would only be achieved through negotiations.
“I am convinced that there is no shortcut to the end of a conflict that has endured for decades. Peace will not come through statements and resolutions at the UN,” Obama said, clearly coming out against the Palestinian plan to seek UN recognition.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday said that direct negotiations was the only way to achieve a stable Middle East peace, maintaining that the Palestinian effort to secure UN recognition of statehood “will not succeed.”
Moments before his joint meeting with President Obama in New York, Netanyahu lauded the American leader for reiterating the unwavering US commitment to Israel during his speech at the United Nations General Assembly.
During their joint press conference, Obama reiterated his commitment to Israel, saying “I think it’s fair to say that today our security cooperation is stronger than it has ever been.
“Peace cannot be imposed – it has to be negotiated. Israelis and Palestinians sitting down together and working through these very difficult issues that have kept the parties apart for decades now; that is what I know is the ultimate goal for all of us – two states, side by side, living in peace and security,” he added.
Obama noted that “recent events in the region remind us how fragile peace can be, and why the pursuit of Middle East peace is more urgent than ever.”
Netanyahu thanked Obama “for standing with Israel and supporting peace through direct negotiations. We both agree that this is the only way.”
Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee, predicted Thursday President Barack Obama would win the Jewish vote and her home state of Florida in the 2012 election.
“The natural home for Jewish voters, both domestically in terms of policy and our Israel policy, is the Democratic Party and President Obama as our candidate,” Schultz said on Fox News.
Where was Obama’s love of Israel and concern when he gave his stomach wrenching obnoxious pro arab speech in Cairo University just after he was inaugarated? He hasn’t changed for now as he didn’t change then. HE SIMPLY NEEDS YOUR VOTES FOR 2012 and once he gets back in he will go back to his “pre 67 borders, refugees and final status on jerusalem” diatribe. Exactly, let him free Sholom Modcha then will see. Don’t fall for a fool.
6111 votes and counting! Only 5000 votes are needed over 30 days, and in just a few hours there are 6111. Lets see if he loves the Jews. Lets see if he will do waht we are asking for Sholom Mordechai. go to http://wh.gov/gWM to vote for justice

haha he’s pro israel that’s the last thing anyone should believe!
Don’t be ridiculous! He equivocates the plight of the Palestinian terrorist with the suffering of a Jewish girl in fear of her life. This is NOT pro-Israel!
“Mr. President” is referring to the president of the U.N., who is currently Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser of Qatar.

Hitler was also a charismatic leader…don’t be fooled by Obama’s words…
Allt he politicians are the same, right and left, republicans and democrats. They all want to see two States. Obama is no better or worse than any of the others
You call that Pro Israel he wants us to give our sworn enemies our land thats all and thats it !!!!
How can anyone be fooled into thinking he’s pro israel and pro yidden. This was a political move, that’s it. Come on, he secured the Jewish vote? I hope we yidden are not so foolish as to believe anything he says or any politician for that matter.
i’d rather he keep hating the yidden openly. you know, making it easier to spot the LIAR!!!!!
Obama is really smart he messes with Israel till he reaches the point where his secular Jewish political money backers get offended then he throws Israel and the Jews a bone that’s exactly what he did this week nothing more
Besides continuing with his mantra, “two states for two people”, he spoke the truth about the Jews historically connection to EY. However, he could give a hoot for Israel. Unfortunately, he is just another career politician who is desperate for Jewish votes. What is sad, is that most liberal Jews and maybe some misguided Orthodox Jews will vote for him, c’v, because of his speech at the UN. What they refuse to realize is that it is his obligation to support Israel in the first place, because Israel has always been a loyal ally since its establishment in 1948. I… Read more »
