A new music project, uniting Jewish music artists, is putting a spotlight on illegal music downloads on the web that has drastically effected the international music industry – including the Jewish one.
The Yiddish and English lyrics, written by Motty Ilowitz and Moshe Kravitsky, a Lubavitcher songwriter from Flatbush, speak about the hardships of being a musician in this day and age.
“The countless downloads that are taking place within the community is causing major losses to the Jewish music industry,” says Danny Finkelman, director of the upcoming music video “The Copyright Project.”
Finkelman, a Lubavitcher, said that unlike his previous productions – Unity For Justice (a.k.a. The Rubashkin song) and The Japan Song – “this project is more of a parody on the music industry.”
The clip, produced by FM Productions of London, is titled ‘A day in the life of a Chassidic Music star’ and has the camera following an artist – portrayed by Chassidic comedian Yoily Leibowitz – through his “artistic” day.
The cast includes Ohad, Michoel Schnitzler, Shloime Gertner, Beri Weber, Dovid Gabai, Yoily Greenfeld, Yumi Lowy, Yitzchak Fuchs, Shloime Daskal and composer Yossi Green.
There are also cameo appearances by Chassidic music producers Gershy Moshkowitz, Naftoli Moshe Schnitzler, Ruli Ezrachi and Mendy Werdyger.
The music video is being sponsored by Israel’s Magen David Adom, Ami
Magazine, Klein’s Ice Cream House, Rykar, and Jewish music distribution
oulets – Niggun, Sameach, Galpaz and Aderet.
COLlive was told the music video is intended to be released following the Jewish holidays in October 2011. Until then, we exclusively present the lyrics and first photos of the clip:
Well I used to be an entertainer
Everyone knew me
The people ran into the stores
To get their hands on a
Copy of my cd
That is of course
Until the birth
Of mp3s
Shut the lights
And curtains down
My work is diminished
Y’Copy paste a thousand times
Parnassah is finished
Not sure you get
What I’m tryin to say
So how’s about I turn
Around and put it this way
A lot of money goes into
The record labels
And I just wanna put
A little food on my table
And give the world what to sing about
But money talks and money walks
And I’m running out
So lets pretend
The music ends
And nobody’s singing
When nothing’s left
To copy paste
They’re gonna be begging
To turn the music back on
I’m sorry folks
It looks like all the money’s gone
And on the day
I’d hate to say
I told you so
So Y’hafta pay
To let us play
The Jewish notes
And if you were me
You’d get to see just how it feels
Watching other people steal
When you start to do
A thing or two
T’change the game
All your friends
Are gonna join along
And do the same
Then we’re gonna laugh
We’re gonna sing
And be so real
When no more people steal
OySongs is a website that allows Jewish musicians to sell music as downloadable MP3’s. Beware though, there is a quite a bit of Kol Ishah.
Is it unanimous that burning cd’s or copying your cd onto an mp3 is stealing?
Do ALL Rabbonim agree?
We live in a new world buddies!
Internet is a free market place! Wake up and smell the coffee!
You can whine from today till tomorrow about “stealing”, but it aint’ gonna change the new world order, find another job!
Sorry to be so “mean”, but that’s just the plain truth, like to call it REALITY!
Anyone know where I can copy this song….
JK, of course
i completely agree with number 9
just because you figured out a loophole to steal 49 more albums then they were giving for free does mean they did anything wrong. It’s funny that they gave a free promotion and some ganif (im sure it wasnt you!) tried to see if he could take more then what was offered (i.e. steal)
copying music is wrong .. though i do wish they made something like itunes for jewish music where u can download individual songs for a price of course … sometimes the full cd sucks or its a full cd of old music with one new song! maybe they should sell those tracks sep. fact is ppl dont want to buy a full album of old songs for one new one so they copy.. (doesnt make it right..) but, maybe they can modernize a bit sell per song i think theyd make more money .. more ppl would buy if they… Read more »
amazing project cant wait
Other people rely on CD and DVD sales to make a Parnasa. It’s not all about the singer making money at a simcha or concert. Here is just a short roundup of Frumme Yidden who rely on the sale of these CD’s to put food on their table.
The composers, arrangers, engineers, printers, duplicators, designers, musicians, sales clerks at Judaica stores … just to name a few.
And again, everyone who does these things in the industry are frum yiden trying to pay expensive yeshiva tuition, buy food for yomim tovim and afford to live in overpriced jewish neighborhoods.
Aderet just had a promotion where they let people download an entire album of their own choice for FREE. Since the people in Aderet don’t know much about the internet, it was possible to download 50 albums for free too! What happened to the parnassa of all the poor singers whose cd’s they were giving out???
i agree with 12!!!
Thanks for all involved, about time for such a project………

i cant wait for it to come out so i can download it.
I will not take a ‘burnt’ or stolen jewish CD or DVD. If i want good videos for my kids – I gotta buy them!!! or theyll stop making them!
From my understanding, CDs never made anyone a parnossa. CDs bring about exposure and demand for concerts. One concert a month and there will be plenty of mezumen to butter your bread.
Dude, not even the goyishe market sells songs for 50 cents, so I dont know what your talking about. Second, would just love to know the thought process involved with weighing the financial benefit of stealing and getting the avairah. For 11.99 download or 99 cents song download it’s worth stealing and getting the avairah, but if it only cost 50 cents a song then you will skip the avairah and pay? The music companies have samples online, almost all major releases are available on the internet and available for download for a whopping 12 bucks!! There are a dozen… Read more »
MoStly music have it
It’s free downloads – that’s the problem
i want ice cream
About time. I have had so many friends brag to me about having huge collections without buying a single album :(.
The jewish companies should start “living with the times” and sell music only online and for 50 cents a song, and then most people wont steal. and they can choose which songs to buy, instead of having to try and find stores for the music.
the whole world ripps off …. the music is only made to get them concerts and gigs
most dont make money on the music and records alone except the big ones
GO MOSHE KRAVITZKY HE IS THE COOLEST. from your dearest co-workers at the office
great! can’t wait till it comes out!
Sounds very similar to Weird Al Yankovic’s “Don’t Download This Song”
