Making Money at Any Price

Op-Ed: Our community idolizes people with money. Their names are on our buildings; they get the most aliyas in shul; they are feted at large communal banquets. Rabbis, social workers and teachers struggle to get by while Wall Street traders have their names in bright lights, Shmuley Boteach writes Full Article

“Is he any worse than Jon Voight and other non-tznius Hollywood actors who are “red-carpeted” at the Annual Chabad Telethon?”

the Question is, is he any better?? he goes around saying hes a Orthodox/ Chabad Rabbi, and doesnt in any way shape or form act like one, they are not Frum yet help promote Chabad activitys, i hope you see and understand why Shmuly should be Beter then them. the problem is he acts like a hollywood actor, let him be an actor but not in the name of a rabbi or Chabad.

Shmuley is "on the money"
January 1, 2009 7:54 am

This article was written for the Jerusalem Post and picked up on this website. So – making it clear – it was NOT written for a Chabad audience. Those guys in Chabad that can actually read English should be worldy wise enough to know that it is baseless to attack Shmuley for his praise of the Dalai Lama. Go back and read the article – the reference is quite within context and pertinent. Not everyone loves Chabad or understands what we stand for. When did so many of us start becoming so mindless? Just go and read what the Rebbe… Read more »

Second article I read from him this week and both were fantastic!
Still from charity is a shame! But be greedy is a horrible “middah”. Why charity funds had to give him the money? They believed he was honest at all? Besides we could start a whole conversation about ” charity funds management”.

…..and yet, once again, Shmuly shows his true colors. I will not comment on the specifics of his article, there wil correctly be many who will do that.

Just count how many times he says “me” , “I” and how he did this and that, bla bla bla bla, etc etc. etc. Just look into what he does and what has done over the past few years to “make money” and you realize how seriously “full of it” he is.

Shmuly, really……get a life!

Shmuley did not compare the dalai lama to the Rebbe. Shmuley was making a point of another well known individual who was not materialistic. He was not endorsing the D.L. so don’t take it out of context. Bash Shmuley when he comes out with a book The Chassidic Sutra. Is he any worse than Jon Voight and other non-tznius Hollywood actors who are “red-carpeted” at the Annual Chabad Telethon?

shame on you

every time i think ‘ this time shmuley wrote well’ ‘”fort er aryn in fatzen zeit” where does the dalai lam connect to this article? do you need any other example other than the rebbe? shame on you shmuley.

Dignity & Majesty.
December 31, 2008 1:03 pm

It’s not an either/or commitment. Man should devote himself to both spiritual study & to secular achievm’t. G-d instructed Adam to be both humble & majestic a his co-partner in subjugating the environment & engaging in the universe by discovering its truth. Jewish philanthropists are to be commended for their commitment to the Jewish people & for working earnestly to achieve in the secular world. According to Rabbi Soloveitchik, who admired the Chabad mov’t even if he was not a Chabadnik, as long as man embraces his unique Jewish identity w/ dignity, the majesty of outside approval & status may… Read more »

i agree with numer 3

the day when we equate everything with everything we lose our identity our focus and our above all potency be well

Very nice.... but.

the article was nicely written and had many correct points. but how can someone say “The same would be said of people like the Dalai Lama.” comparing the Dalai Lama to the Rebbe Lehavdil Elef Havdolos.
i think that is enough to discredit the author, and an article witht that written in it should not be posted on a lubavitc website.

my opinion

i normally dont agree with shmuely boteach. in fact i find it very uncomfortable to read about his association with chabad.however, this article spoke to a very correct and crucial aspect of our lives and i applaud him on his clarity and vision.

I like the honesty

Poeple will post negative comments as that seems to be the norm, however a Yasher Koach on an article well written.

We should all take a lesson and correct our focus in life.
