A Menorah lighting ceremony took place at the Statue of Liberty tonight.
Rabbi Nachman Holtzberg, father of Gavriel HY”D, lit the menorah, a defiant statement to those who would try and destroy good and bring darkness to this world, as the symbol of Jewish strength against oppression – the Menorah, was lit at the foot of the symbol of freedom.
After the brachos were recited Chazan Levi Kaplan sang Haneiros Hallalu.
Rabbi Yehudah Krinsky, Chairman of Merkos, remarked that the joy tonight is bittersweet. We are experiencing joy because we celebrate chanukah in the light of freedom, and bitter because we remember the victims, shluchim Gavriel and Rivkah Holtzberg, who were viciously murdered in Mumbai.
A number of dignitaries attended, including a representative from NY Governor Paterson, who sent Chanukah greetings.
The boys choir M Generation sang, and doughnuts were distributed.

Besides no press or officials being there on Tuesday night…., there has been an official Menorah Lighting at the Statue of Liberty for the last 3 years with permission from the US Park Police.
