Texas Governor Rick Perry met with a delegation of Texas Shluchim Thursday to mark the first full day of Chanukah, lighting the menorah in the governor’s public reception room, then singing and dancing along to traditional songs.
Among those joining Gov. Perry at the celebration were Rabbi Shimon Lazaroff, Rabbi Chaim Lazaroff, Rabbi Yoseph Levertov, Rabbi Zev Johnson, Rabbi Yossi Lazaroff and State Representative District 49 Elliot Naishat.
Rabbi Shimon Lazaroff congratulated Gov. Perry on his relection and shared the message of Chanukah with the Governor. “The United States allows freedom of religion and not freedom from religion. Chanukah dellivers the message of religous freedom, where the few believers won over the many opressors,” he said.
Gov. Perry thanked him for his kind words, and expressed his appreciation to have the opportunity to partake in the ceremony to be shared with the public.
Rabbi Yossi Lazaroff, of Texas A&M led the prayers and presented Gov. Perry with a signature Chabad at Texas A&M buckle. Gov. Perry, an Aggie, took the buckle with great enthusiasm and tweeted a picture of it from his cell phone.
