Public relations in the 21st Century
September 17, 2010 4:49 pm

There is something to be said about how dismal a public relations job is being done during Kaporos. I’m all for shechting if the animal is actually used. THAT detail is not highlighted by the community. Instead, critical people see what seems pagan and unnecessary and denounce the idea as a whole. If someone showed how the chickens were actually fed to those in need, the argument against this ritual would be less potent.

Be brave and post this comment
September 17, 2010 2:57 pm

The chickens are stacked in crates for hours if not days with no food and water. And the crates are so small that they can’t stretch their wings or stand up. They’re not inanimate objects. They feel hunger, thirst, fear and pain.

No matter what way you look at it, it is still mean what were doing to the chickens.

To all the angry anti-Jews-get real
September 17, 2010 1:30 pm

The Jewish people, particularly hose who are observant of every detail of the Torah, are the most compassionate behaving people in the world. Get to know them. You are safe in any neighborhood where they live and, having grown up out of town, in a place where many Jewish people owned dogs, I never once saw them hitting or punching their pets as I have often seen other people do on Eastern Parkway. Do you know that a Jewish farmer is not allowed to take care of his own needs until his animals are fed & the cows milked? Your… Read more »

Chickens are usually transported in crates whether or not they are owned by Jewish people. If it is for an extended amount of time and they are being starved and you know that for a fact, then it is certainly not in line with the Torah guidelines. This does not change the fact that the act of kaporos does not torture animals.

Every Life Is Precious
September 17, 2010 12:28 pm

PeTA and Kapparos are irrelevant to that one fact. Despite all that humans expound, work and war for in the name of their particular belief: every life is precious. Humans have yet to understand and respect this. Every, single, life. Precious.

Are you saying that being crammed in a crate for an extended length of time with no food, no water, no ability to rest…with your fellow cretures dying next to you and being completey scared does not cause suffering?

moshiach
September 17, 2010 9:05 am

why didnt they jack up the prices REALLY high for peta

They do it for soda cans and bottles...why not?
September 17, 2010 6:39 am

Add a “deposit fee” to the usual price; let’s say about $20. Then, after handing over the chicken to be shechted, the $20 gets refunded. This way there is money to be made if the PETA people don’t return the chickens–they forfeit their deposit. For the obviously frum Yidden, waive the fee. Just make sure that legal bases are covered so the PETA people can’t claim some kind of religious discrimination because some get charged a deposit and others don’t…

September 17, 2010 12:20 am

Just wondering.. after rescuing the chickens, what would you do with them? And what would you say would be the best way to provide for their futures and save them from their fate? What establishment can you send them to that would take care of them and send them to pasture when they are old as is done with horses? These are the practicalities of the matter and you need to follow through.

September 17, 2010 12:13 am

I can fully inderstand how the appearance of dozens of chickens in a non farm environment must seem strange to you. I am responding to your comment on the assumption that you are sincere and truly believe you are doing good for the world- as I believe in respecting other people’s rights to different points of view and customs.. I can’t speak for the way any particular individual treats a chicken but I do know something about what the Torah has to say on the matter. Are you aware of the details of the performance of kaporos? It may surprise… Read more »

I am one of the people associated with the rescue of the chickens at President and Kingston. For the record, we have nothing to do with PETA. I am on record of being critical of that organization for killing the majority of animals at it’s shelter. To me that detracts from the credibility of their stated mission. Secondly many of us spend a lot more time protesting at KFC than we do at Kaparot. As someone who has spent a lifetime countering anti-semetic stereotypes in the Christian community, the accusation of anti-semitism is laughable. We were there because Kaparot is a… Read more »

September 16, 2010 4:01 pm

do not give peta any attention !!!! that is what they want. don’t post any news about them. don’t talk to them! don’t watch their youtube videos, every extra hit to their sights, posts, videos etc is a plus for them. instead counter-act with positive videos, posts ect about shechting being the most umane about the eidlkeit of yidden etc.
I work with kaporos in my city and we treat te chickens a thousand times better than the farms we get them from (seen it with my own eyes)

I understand that we eat kreplach on Yom Kippur because the white of the dough represents Hashem’s Chessed and the red meat his Gevurah. On Yom Kippur we want it so that Hashems Chessed towards us should dominate and hide his Gevurah against us.

Dear #3 insanity,,,
Don’t be surprised, they’re following the ways of a segment of this community.
About 25-30 ‘yidden’ here should either do ‘teshuva’ or be kicked out.
If the ‘yira shemayims’ are unified (Condtradiction?) we can do it. Either peacefully, or…

I just heard that PETA is organizing volunteers, and about 3 million paid workers to go around the USA, then the world, to stop all animal slaughter by purchasing the animals: steer, goats, sheep, all types of fowl, etc. The massive effort will be enlarged to cover all fish restaurants and retail stores requiring another 8 million workers. To sign up for this worthy endeavor, write to: Avoda Zarahville Post Office Box # 00000 (This effort is ‘zilch’) Enjoy! The Israelis should have charged $20.
This world is filled with genuine suffering, and to misplace energy and passion trying to ruin someone else’s religious observance in the name of “compassion” is a disgrace.

I think we have the rite to tell them to stop bugging us.

They say ” you see youre child is crying becase they can’t see the chicken sufferring” and the like.

When a woman asked me to give it to them when I’m done i said rhe truth, they are given to the poor to eat this is charity.
We eat chickens this is normal.

One of the many faces of antisemitism
September 16, 2010 12:14 am

They are trying to intimidate us as others have over the centuries but we are the ones who always survive. How is the act of kaporos cruelty to animals? I have not seen one valid statement that rationally links the act of kaporos and cruelty. I have never once seen a demonstartion outside a seafood restaurant yet -If a chicken could talk do you think it would choose to be boiled alive like the lobsters in non-kosher restaurants or perform kaporos? This is typical of the distortion of anti semitism: it desperately tries to justify its own cruelty- by ascribing… Read more »

MENTAL DISORDER
September 16, 2010 12:13 am

BEING A LIBERAL IS A MENTAL DISORDER

hahhahahaha this is the funniest story that COl ever posted!

Some enterprise-minded Israeli bochurim were seen purchasing chickens for the $10 fee and then selling them to the PETA affiliated activists at a $5 profit.

HAHAHAHAHAHAH!

THEN WHAT HAPPENS THE BRING THE ABUSED CHICKENS TO A FARM SO THEY CAN LIVE THE REST OF THEIR LIVES UNTIL THEY DIE OF OLD AGE?

BUT WAIT… DO THEY JAIL THEM? OR LET THEM GO FREE SO A DOG OR CAT CAN EAT THEM?

HAHAHAHAHAHA

What the problem is with PETA!
September 15, 2010 10:18 pm

PETA believes animals should have the same rights as humans. That is why they helped ruin Postville. Their warped thinking knows no bounds. They are not exclusively into vegetarianism (which can be noble) or preventing obvious animal cruelty (a mitzveh for goyin from the noahide law, as well as Yidden from the Torah) but they want much more far reaching changes. They will try to hurt people to save animals- by financial ruination, slander, and obvious lies and deception. It is true, when you treat animals like people, you will end up treating people like animals. That is PETA. Their… Read more »

September 15, 2010 9:55 pm

They should feed that man some chickens. Maybe it will put some meat on his bones.

Soinei Isroel
September 15, 2010 9:51 pm

The only reason they come to kapporos is because they are soinei isroel. They are trying to portray yiden as barbaric for shechting chickens when there are billions of chickens slaughtered in the general market under horrible conditions.
And of course lets not forget about the millions of humans that are being starved and killed in places like africa. They are just using yiden as a publicity stunt.

September 15, 2010 9:21 pm

it weould be a real shame if hey happened to get a punctured tire (or tires) while there. those poor chickens would be in real pain in a hot truck, until they could get it repaired.

Facts
September 15, 2010 9:21 pm

I don’t know who these people are but they are not formally affiliated with PETA. This was not an official PETA action. It is important to remember, however, that PETA did rescue chickens who were abandoned after kapporos two years ago and they were taken to a sanctuary. Two chickens were left abandoned in a cardboard box in front of Shea Hecht’s and one chicken was found in a transport crate in Williamsburg (she was left there like garbage all through Yom Kippur). This is all recorded on the PETA video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FDVSwU1QObM

shouldv'e charged them 1000$ a chicken
September 15, 2010 8:59 pm

let’s see if they’ll save the chickens for that price
let’s see them put their money with their mouth is

what fools!
September 15, 2010 8:52 pm

they think that will make a dent in our use of chickens? As we run low on chickens we will just order more! and these fools are just wasting their money! And drive down Atlantic Ave. there are plenty of checkens to buy there.

'when is Kapparos?'
September 15, 2010 8:21 pm

I was doing Mivtza Shofar on the first day of Rosh Hashana and a older skinny man with a cap approached me and asked me ‘when is Kapparos?’ i answered that it was on the next Friday. He walked off and didn’t want to hear Shofar. That was the same guy that appears in the picture.

Big deal ...
September 15, 2010 8:16 pm

Nu, if they want to pay, why not? It makes money for the organization and it saves the burden of having to shecht the chickens… Ken yirbu!

September 15, 2010 8:16 pm

Cant they sue them? They are not selling them, they are lettng people use them.
