Vaad Hakohol of Crown Heights has announced a special drive this Sunday to reinstate the Mas Hakohol communal tax in the Chassidic neighborhood in Brooklyn.
A table is set in the main shul of 770 Eastern Parkway throughout the day where Vaad members Zaki Tamir, Yossi Hackner and Fishel Brownstein together with volunteers will be accepting payment by cash, check or credit card.
Mas Hakohol was designed to support the Beis Din of Crown Heights. It was instituted around the time of the original elections for the Rabbonim of the Beis Din of Crown Heights in the 1980s.
In 1991, the Rebbe sent a check for $120 for this cause.
Although a small number of community residents have continued to pay the Mas fee until this day, this practice has been somewhat neglected over the past few years (The Moshe Rubashkin administration tried to revive it).
In conjunction with today’s election for a third member to the Beis Din, the Vaad Hakohol is asking all residents to renew their contributions.
The annual amount is now $180.
It may be paid in one annual amount or split into 12 monthly payments of $15. Residents who are unable to afford $15 per month are asked to commit $10, $5 or even $2 per month until their situation improves.
Credit Card payments are now being accepted for annual or monthly amounts. Checks should be written to Crown Heights Jewish Community Council. All funds received for Mas Hakohol will be set aside exclusively for the support of the Beis Din.
An online payment option is not said to be available.
maybe if community council will keeps its end of the deal regardless which administration stopped it and pay rabbi marlow off blessed memory wife ,may she live healthy long long yes long years to come back pay promised her and monies will also not go to any other source ONLY to the 3 rabbis maybe just maybe there will be trust with the vaad hakohl
I have paid the Mas for many years and only stopped after things got out of hand with accusations of misappropriation etc.
I think payment should be a pre-requisite for participating in the election, as a voter or as a candidate.
Did any of the candidates who were living in Crown Heights when the Rebbe signed that check pay at that time or any subsequent time?
I wrote them a $180 check for the year.
and is Rav Schwei actually getting a salary finally???!!!
I believe most communities have a mas hakohol. Not that I mind not paying, but the free ride only lasts so long. Maybe this will make CH feel like a community? Who knows….
im from the younger generation… can someone please explain the mas hakohol – is it obligatory, or they’re just asking pple to do it, like donations?
Whats goo about rabbi Bogomilsky is that he does not need a salary.
Show us that Vaad Hakohol is ready to reach out and listen to us the people, and the people will respond and support the community tax.
so what is his salary?
Great Idea!
On-line payments can easily be set up by utilizing PayPal or Google CheckOunt.
Come on. In this day and age, no online option? Can you spell PAYPAL?
