Still can't believe it

to #119- Let me assure you I am neither a youth or naive. Thinking that people of a different religion all hate us is ignorant and just plain prejudiced. It’s too bad you had a bad experience with your employee, but after giving you 4 years of service, maybe she finally realized what you really thought of her and decided to confirm your assumptions. This will be my last comment on this matter as this whole discussion has gotten ridiculous.

Actually I think that we should be more tolerant. Allow the Nanny’s to but what they want, allow our children to dress the way they want to, don’t say a waord when you see a young teenager with a yarmulka on his head carrying skates on Shabbos and in generqal, lets be open minded and lets allow everyone to do as they please. So What? Who cares? Its non of your business…

I am incredulous when I read comments that so indignantly defend our hired-help from racial comments like “goya”/ “shiksa” even going as far as claiming that this could even lead to a holocaust G-D Forbid. Or saying Be dan L’kaf Z’chus – they are human beings like you and me and deserving of respect. In truth I think that these types of comments – or worse the one about not snatching the forbidden food away would cause irreparable psychological religious associations for the youngster (and if it was poison?), come from youthful inexperience and naivete. The fact is that Rashi… Read more »

All of you who are recommending that someone should have snatched away the ice cream, please think of the consequences of such an action! A young child completely innocent enjoying a treat which may not be kosher, and suddenly a complete stranger barges in and snatches away the treat and throws it in the garbage! What do you think causes more damage to the precious neshoma? Inadvertently eating a snack with a questionable provenance or the trauma of having this treat snatched away! The snatching away is something that the child will remember for the rest of his life and… Read more »

September 3, 2010 4:19 am

I happened to be shopping at the local supermarket today and as I was getting ready to leave after paying etc. I turned to leave and noticed a toddler whose age is about 13-16 months. He was fastened into his seatbelt of his stroller (the three wheel jogger style) at the entrance/exit of store and he was munching on something (a cookie perhaps.) Then I noticed he suddenly started gagging on his snack/food. I immediately went over to try to help him dislodge the food stuck in his throat and then noticed he was left unattended. After about a minute… Read more »

we all got here to this world because our alte bubbehs were not working women. Now I am not saying that women should not work because money is so incredibly hard to come by, but it is so crucial that we monitor our activites and how things go. and its really important to try to get work either during school hours or get a degree in something you can do from the home. Whatever it is, you just have to try to be careful and do your best. Thats what comes as rsponsibility when working out of the home…..

September 2, 2010 4:24 pm

I’m sorry this post didin’t go up earlier on but in any case I hope people see it. Earlier on this week (maybe Monday or Tuesday) there was a KOSHER ice cream truck outside of Lefferts Park at around 4/5o’clock. Not many people went to it maybe because they didn’t realize it was kosher though it DEFINITELY was! It was an ice cream truck from upstate probably trying to “chap arein” some last chances for bussiness. As I was leaving the park It started to pull away until the ice cream man saw a nanny with a boy around 5… Read more »

I am really offended by the way some of you speak so rudely of “goyim” which in itself is an offensive term. You cannot lump all non Jewish people into one category and say they are all cheaters and “untrainable!” Have you learned nothing from the Holocaust? Do you want them to speak of us Jews that way? I am more concerned about the obnoxious way some of you speak of non Jews than the fact the one Jewish boy may have mistakenly eaten some ice cream. And you have no proof the sitter wasn’t Jewish. I don’t get it. Chabad purports itself to be open minded and love your fellow Jew. You catch more flies with honey than vinegar after all. Why is it that those on shlichus can be accepting of all Jews no matter what their level of observance but within Chabad communities you find the most hostile and judgemental chabadniks around?? And you wonder why there are Chabad kids that go off the derech??? Hello! I think the open mindedness and love for your fellow Jew begins at home- in your own neighborhood. True story
September 1, 2010 2:53 pm

An adult friend of mine recently told me a story of when she was 4 years old. Her mother had a regular appointment on Sundays and would leave her with “the live-in maid”. One Sunday the maid was off and the mother took her to the park and they passed a church nearby. The little Jewish girl (my friend) crossed herself. The mother freaked out and asked her why she did that? – The answer was that that’s where she goes every Sunday with the maid!!!!!!!

NON JEWISH BABYSITTERS

WHY IN THE WORLD DOES ANYONE ST8LL HAVE NON JEWISH PEOPLE TAKING CARE OF THEIR CHILDREN. I KNOW PERSONALLY OF CASES WHERE THEY GAVE THE IKIDS TREIFE MEAT AND SAID (ACTUALLY SAID) THE PARENTS WON’T KNOW THE DIFFERENCE. AND THAT’S THE LEAST OF IT. PARENTS OUGHT TO WAKE UP AND REALIZE THAT THESE CHILDREN ARE OUR TREASURES AND SHOULD BE TREATED AS SUCH. THERE ARE PLENTY OF JEWSH PEOPLE LOOKNG FOR WORK. YES THEY MIGHT COST A LITTLE MORE, BUT YOU WOULD PAY ANY PRICE FOR YOUR HUMAN HAIR WIG ETC. ISN’T YOUR CHILD WORTH MORE?????

No Choice
August 31, 2010 8:14 pm

Perhaps if there were GOOD places in Crown Heights to leave your child, people wouldn’t use non-Jewish nannies. The daycare choices for those who need longer hours than 9-2 are extremely limited with each group that has long hours being overcrowded – up to 40 kids in one basement. Is that better?

Better to find a frum sitter
August 31, 2010 6:41 pm

There are plenty of problems with non frum Jews as well. 2 examples: Despite my strict rules for my kids about eating candy, a Russian woman who worked for me would buy them candy every day after I left for work and let them go to sleep with lollypops in their mouths! My oldest was almost 4 and when she told me about it I was horrified. But I spoke to the woman and figured it would stop. Perhaps you need a lesson or two.
Mitzvois are not given for reasons. Even explanations in Zohar or Tanya. A mitzva is a mitzva. A shoygeg is a shoygeg. (Incidentally if it was beshoygeg perek 8 in Tanya doesn’t apply.)
You Lubavitchers have made your own Torah, and are clueless about the Ancient-Current tradition and Halacha-Hashkafa of Klal Yisroel.

from http://www.sichosinenglish.org/books/the-laws-of-yichud/11.htm by Rabbi Dubov One should not employ a woman — Jewish or not — who is a prutzah to babysit even if there are effective shomrim available. This should be avoided not so much for Yichud considerations (since halachically a child shomer is effective even for a prutzah[339]) as for tznius considerations. A word of caution — when employing a non-observant babysitter for observant children, one should give the babysitter certain guidelines: 1. she should be dressed in a manner of tznius; 2. she should be told about Kashrus, e.g. she should not offer the children any foods… Read more »

August 31, 2010 11:27 am

A goy does not have the concept of yiras shomayim, to the extent that we do. While, yes, she may want to please her employer, and will generally follow instructions given to her about milk/meat/kosher, a goy can not understand why even a tiny drop of something not allowed to us, is very serious. She may likely be innocently just trying to make the child happy, because she, yes, cares about your child. But your child’s spiritual care is not her domain. Don’t rely on training your goyishe nanny and then depending on her yiras shomayim. It’s just not there!

Women should hire non-Jewish housekeepers to clean the house in order to free the mother to watch her children. If the mother works, just as she wouldn’t leave the child alone, she should persevere until she gets a Jewish babysitter.
If the mother does not work, there is no excuse for leaving a child with a non-Jewish nanny/baby-sitter.

at least people are outraged about this!! should we let this go to? obviously not.

August 31, 2010 10:01 am

that is a horrifying story. while i do agree that it is probably better to get a jewish nanny, you can’t really assume that all goyishe nannies will hurt your children and ignore halacha. some people take pride in their work and want to do right by the family. you just need to have a long, hard talk with your babysitter and maybe give them a “quiz” to ensure they know the rules? or have them sign a “contract” and even get it notarized saying that they will follow halacha?

you CANNOT train a goy
August 31, 2010 9:53 am

Sorry, but as much as you “teach” them and tell them not to give your child trief, they just don’t get it. They think it is ok for icecream, or a cookie, etc.

Bottom line is, if you are leaving your child with a goy, then expect your kitchen to be trief and your child to eat it too.

I just don’t understand people, you would never leave your expensive jewellry in the hands of your goyishe nanny, but your most precious diamonds, your children are left with them. There are plenty of jewish women who need babysitting jobs.

Why endanger our Yiddishe kinder to be taken care of by any Goy, for this happens all the time. Come on mother’s, pay a few dollars an hour more to a frum Yiddishe lady, then you will surely avoid all these problems, and will know that your kinder are in a worry free environment, regarding Kashrus. Are not your Neshomas worth it?.

So why is everyone so upset? I don’t see anyone outraged at anyone women who are on Kingston with their hair sticking out of their Tichel, so why be so upset about Cholov Akum? chicken and cheese
August 31, 2010 8:42 am

I have a cleaning lady who i would never leave my children with even when they are sleeping who once was sitting and eating her lunch which consisted of cheese. My toddler was near her in her hi chair eating CHICKEN soup and aked my lady for some cheese. I was right there cooking and right away stopped the situation. THIS IS AFTER YEARS OF TRAINING THE LADY BETWEEN MILK AND MEAT! THEY DON”T GET IT! AND THESE GOYIM WILL NEVER GET IT! What if I stepped out of the room for that split second! Women do you understand what… Read more »

No Tollerance
August 31, 2010 7:58 am

It’s amazing to me how little tollerance our own community has for Shomer Shabbos people who live here. Not everyone who lives here is 100 percent Lubavitch. Not everyone who lives here is perfect. Not everyone who lives here is stringinent in all areas. Some people are trying to be more, some people we should be so happy they are trying at all. A community of children of the Rebbe, each one of us a Shliach and we look down so strongly like Lakewooders on our own who are less frum than us. I’m pretty confident it was someone who… Read more »

You’re right.

Now…do you give YOUR children Cholov Akum/Stam? Do YOU personally follow Rav Moshe’s Z”TL Psak? No? Thought not.

It’s good enough for yenem, but not for you. I rest my case.

Puh-leeeeze! The Rabbonim never come out with anything, why start now? You think this issue is important? Have they done anything about kids off the derech, spousal abuse, unTznius dress and behavior? No, they only monitor Machloykes.

Thanks for my morning giggle.

Fed Up
August 31, 2010 7:25 am

We overworked mothers also need a life.
So it happened. For the kid it was unintentional.
Why not look at the positive side? This babysitter spent her own money on the child. She cares.
Since when was being frum meant to be a ball-and-chain locked on our feet?

What about our Russian ladies?
August 31, 2010 7:25 am

I see so many Russian ladies watching our children…true, many of them aren’t “frum” as we define it, but they are Jewish Bubbies watching Jewish kids! No one takes care of Yiddishe kinder like Yidden. Hire a Russian lady…they need the work, they are kind & loving, & they won’t give your kid treife. Another thought: how about babysitters (girls who will help after school or people looking for full time work) post their availability in COL’s classifieds? It’s a great service & you get yourself “out there”. Lastly: we need an agency here in CH to supply vetted, responsible… Read more »

the difference between trimming the beard and eating Cholov Akum is that Cholov Akum is something that is bad for the neshama, and it brings the one eating it to be able to do more like trimming

know your babysitter

August 31, 2010 1:23 am

The following is a story i heard in shul about 3 weeks ago. There was a very hard Jewish working mother who had a nanny/babysitter that took care of the house most of the day until the mother would come home from work. one day during the period that the mother took off work after giving birth the nanny was less at home since the mother was there, one day the 6 year old just couldn’t stop crying so the ten year old son told his mother why don’t you do what the babysitter does when he cries? what does… Read more »

Stories like this convince me. I need someone reliable who loves kids – just 1.5 to 2 hours starting 3:00 pm a few days a week to watch a delicious 2 yr. old. Please email [email protected].

To 4 and 13 most Poskim hold that “Not Cholov Yisroel” is not Kosher and Chabad if of the same opinion. It’s not like Pas Yisroel that most Poskim hold is just a chumra. People must know that C’L is not a chumra it is Chi-yuv and a few poskim like Rabbi Moshe Fienstein have heterim which were not accepted by most Torah Scholars.

Tip of the iceberg?
August 31, 2010 12:18 am

When I was a baby, over fifty years ago, my working mother (A”H) fired the housekeeper/babysitter. (In that era, she was referred to as — pardon the expression — a “maid”.) Why did she get fired? Back before Reye’s Syndrome there was something that every family kept in the house, called chewable “Baby Aspirin”. Well, apparently, this employee handled my crying by keeping me asleep as much as possible, frequently giving me “Baby Aspirin”. So, Mommies, there are other things a Nanny (housekeeper/babysitter/maid/goya — whatever euphemism you want to use) might do, which you — the mommy — would not… Read more »

Take a picture of the nanny and klid, take the ice cream away form the child DO SOMETHING!!! You saw it you are responsible to help keep this Yiddishe Neshoma safe. If it were my kid CH”V I hope and pray anyone would goover to him and grab the ice creama way before he has a chance to eat the cholov Akum and affect his Yiras Shamayim negatively. ACTION!!!! The Lesson - Hen Am Levodo Yishkon, Ubagoyim Loy Yischashov
August 30, 2010 11:52 pm

The lesson to be learned is that Yidden in general and especially Chassidim should not be partying with “free hot-dogs” with Goyim in the park. The entire environment is a Goyishe Environment and ending up eating Cholov Akum which is metamtem Es Halev, is only a natural outgrowth of such mingling. The Goya who gave the ice Cream was right, in her own mind, seeing that the mother doesn’t mind mingling with goyim and so why not go all the way, the nanny rightfully thought. If hanging around in area where Goyishe Park, where Goyishe Music is looked up to… Read more »

It's kosher not Cholov Yisrael

August 30, 2010 11:37 pm

Today we are all walking around with camera/phones. Next time someone see something like this 1st of all say something. To the kid or nanny 2nd try to take a picture of at least the nanny so the parent could identify her as their nanny.

same article?
August 30, 2010 11:28 pm

didnt we read this already??

making it clear to the nanny is not enough
August 30, 2010 11:27 pm

I dont think making it clear to a nanny is enough. How can we trust a goy? the goy that is trustable is rare. And only when we determine clearly that a goy is going to listen to us and be responsible should we even consider allowing a goy to babysit our children….in general it is better to find a nice yiddishe lady who is yirat Shomayim to take care of the little ones.

hello?
August 30, 2010 11:21 pm

why didnt you go and tell the nanny then and there and thereby prevent the boy from eating non kosher ice cream!
HELLO WHERE’S YOUR INSTINCT AS A JEWISH PARENT?

oh my gosh
August 30, 2010 11:21 pm

this is what happens when ppl get non jewish maids/nannies to watch their kids it’s just hoorible i mean if your gonna get a non jewish nanny at least train her.tell her about kosher etc.

TERRIBLE
August 30, 2010 11:18 pm

This is very frightening and if the parents would know how and why this is so detrimental to their child they might only hire frum babysitters or bring them to a frum babysitting service. Maybe someone can be so kind to post the Rebbe”s views on how imp. kashrus is especially for children on this site to enlighten some parents ASAP.

did u kindly stop her?
August 30, 2010 11:17 pm

Not a judgement. just wondering out loud… I would have gone over and mentioned to her that he is not able to eat it.

August 30, 2010 10:51 pm

you should of walked over to the kid and say to him, its not kosher, dont eat it. remind him, the kid may not have thought about the kashrus at all. they are innocent kids. please next time, tell the kid, dont eat it, its not kosher. sing him the uncle moishe song.

you should also tell the babysitter, not to do that again,or she will lose her job.
