Congressman Anthony Weiner has urged US Attorney General Eric Holder to “direct a full and immediate investigation of the allegations of impropriety and unfairness in the Sholom Rubashkin case.”
In a letter dated August 13, 2010 – a copy of which was sent to COLlive.com Wednesday – Weiner says an investigation will “remove the cloud that is growing publicly and in judicial circles” about the case.
The letter follows a speech he gave to Agudath Israel of America’s National Leadership Mission to Washington, DC, which has lobbied on Rubashkin’s behalf.
Weiner, a member of the U.S. House Committee on the Judiciary, wrote to Holder: “This particular case is also worthy of your attention because of the overly harsh and clearly disparate sentence imposed by the judge” Linda Reade.
He also mentions the incriminating evidence that Judge Reade coordinated with prosecutors and acted as judge in the contentious conviction of Agriprocessors officials.
The U.S. Department of Justice declined in April 2010 to intervene in the case of Rubashkin, former manager of the kosher meat plant in Iowa.
Holder’s assistant Lanny Breuer wrote then that concerns were best raised with the presiding judge in northern Iowa, Linda Reade, or with local federal prosecutors.
In response to Weiner’s letter, Rabbi Chaim Dovid Zweibel, Executive Vice President of Agudath Israel, wrote: “Congressman Weiner’s letter is cogent, compelling and courageous.”
In a statement to COLlive.com, Zweibel said “the letter points out, correctly, that there is much in how this case has been handled that raises serious questions about overzealous prosecutorial tactics and perhaps even improper judicial conduct.
“The community’s confidence in the impartial pursuit and administration of justice has been severely shaken. As Congressman Weiner suggests, it would behoove Attorney General Holder to take a personal interest in this extremely troubling case. “
I hope that Congressman Wiener’s letter to Eric Holder strikes a cord with him but, not to be discouraging, I’m afraid that Eric Holder is “tone deaf” and not listening to most of the public now matter what religion with the exclusion of Muslim. I hope and pray that you will get assistance. I fear Eric Holder is an “empty vessel” as is the President.

And now, the congressman can go shake hands in Crown Heights and the rest of New York’s Jewish communities, and tell everyone how so, so much he has tried to help Rabbi Rubashkin.
Is he raising money for Rubashkin’s defense? Is he appearing at any of the many, many rallies held on Rubashkin’s behalf? Has he visited the family, or Rabbi Rubashkin in prison?
And what took him so long?

Just because one person is a mentsch about one issue, does NOT whitewash the entire party. From what I’ve heard, he’s not always right on a lot of issues.
