By COLlive reporter in Crown Heights
The elder Rabbi Nissan Mangel has removed his candidacy from the elections for a third rov in the Crown Heights Bais Din (Badatz), members of the election committee said.
“Rabbi Mangel returned to New York yesterday, after he was away from his home for a few days and could not be reached, and notified us of his decision to withdraw his candidacy,” Mendel Schneerson, Yaakov Herzog and Sruli Sandhaus wrote in a letter.
Mangel’s statement to COLlive.com last week that he will not be running led to bit of a frenzy among those involved in the elections, with Rabbi Yaakov Schwei‘s representatives questioning its accuracy (Mangel was to be the candidate from their side).
Following the exclusive report, Rabbi Binyomin Rosenberg of Monsey, who is supervising the elections, asked Rabbi Schwei’s people for a clarification on the news.
With the information confirmed by Mangel himself, the question remains whether Rabbi Rosenberg and his 4 colleagues, who have worked to restore order to the community’s leadership, will allow a new candidate to be picked at this point, even though the deadline was last Friday.
Rabbi Schwei’s representatives argue that the candidacy of Rabbi Moshe Bogomilsky, backed by Badatz member Rabbi Avrohom Osdoba, was submitted late as well, and therefore they should be allowed to choose a new candidate.
Rabbi Osdoba’s delegates deny that claim, and told COLlive.com that “their (Rabbi Schwei’s people) inability to produce a candidate has shown their true colors, and the majority of the community is not tolerating their shenanigans.”
An additional potential candidate, Rabbi Emanuel Chaviv of Israel, was disqualified by Rabbi Rosenberg on the basis that they do not have enough time to look into his credentials before the election.
The election is scheduled for Sunday, September 5, 2010.

I don’t want to be in a shchuna with Yankel Schvei as a rov.
Rov Osdoba has my respect because he was there in the time of Rav Dvorkin,ZT”L & Rav Marlow,ZT”L. & has shimush & is respected.
But Schvei is a Johnny come lately who is not a team player & came out of nowhere & was not even elected democratically.
If it was democratic there would have been another candidate besides Schvei.
Why can’t the community nominate candidates. The Psak Din said only that the recommendation of Rabbi Osdoba or Shvei is enough to qualify a candidate without further questioning. It didn’t say other, perhaps even more qualified, candidates for Rov might be availably, but not nominated by Rabbi Osdoba or Shvei. Someone preferable to both of them OR to neither of them, is what we need!
We need to put old Bais Din politics aside, because while we are all worried which camp/side wins, we don’t realize that there is a growing young generation of families in CH that need a good Rov who they can truly relate to. Rabbi Bogomilsky, aside from him being a respected person, he is very relatable to people in general and he is especially relatable to the new younger generation of CH families. Being the person he is, he is able to understated and relate to their concerns and deal with them with care. I don’t know how relatable the… Read more »
To quote Rodney King- “Can’t we just all get along??!”
We must have a third Rov independent of Schwei and Osdobo
anything else is a waste of time and serves no purpose.
Simply put the incumbents will never see eye to eye so we must have strong new blood.
If not there will be no real CHBD just a farce
And he did bring change…
But what’s your point here?
You want “businesses as usual” in CHT’s?
Or maybe you fear an independent?
Why?
Who are you and what is your “position” that you seem to feel so threatened by change?
after all that’s transpired in the past year, i’m shocked that we’re still into this “he’s on this side…or he’s on that side”… it’s an absolute outrage that we’re picking rabbonim based on who’s side he’s on…rabbonim are supposed to beyond that!
let’s wake up and choose the third rov solely by the standards of who is most qualified and not WHICH SIDE HE’S ON.
To Numer 20
Obama also has promised to bring change.
lets not forget rabbu shvei ran against how many people? thats right thats how he got in now its time for someone from the other side to get in!!
r bogomilsky is very good with r. osdoba and r/ schvay. so i don’t see a better choice. and of course he know rabonus very well. hes the rov of so many in C’H NON OF THE RABONIM ARE AFRAID OF HIM JUST THE SCHVAY PEOPLE WHO USE HIM FOR THERE PERSONAL AGENDA.
This only goes to show the bankrukptcy of Rabbi Schwei and his handlers. They have no candidates, and he himself was never more than a political appointment, put up because some people got scared that Rav Osdoba had become too powerful.
Anybody remember the parable of the Emperor’s New Clothes??
The former Lubavitcher Rov of Monsey, Rabbi Mattis Kantor, now lives in Crown Heights. He possesses all the credentials required to be a chaver of the Bedatz and then some. He has gained a wide reputation in the time he has lived here and would bring the welcomed change we are all waiting for.
We could afford to have two Beis Dins. No more mochlokes!1000 support “Old” & 1000 support “New”.
the Rabonim don’t need to see eye to eye, they have to do what the Shulchan Aruch dictates. Rabonim don’t make the law they just interpret the law.
Nobody needs the Rabonim to drink coffee together, that would be nice but it don’t matter.
This is not about sides, this is about what is good for the community.
Apparently this is what happened: Neither side had a candidate (disgusting that we speak of “sides”, but that’s the reality.) Both sides heard of a possible very independent (and experienced, capable etc) candidate. The Schwei people panicked at the last minute and submitted a straw-front-man. The other side THEN panicked (they were less afraid of the independent rov) and submitted their representative just after the deadline – and it was accepted. Then a strange thing happened. The independent candidate failed to show up (some say disgusted at the whispering from both sides). So the straw-front-man withdrew. Now Bogomilsky is left… Read more »
the story i heard was that rabbi bogomilsky called rabbi schwei and said to him i want to run for rov and i dont only want to from one side. are you ok if i run for rov and can we work together (not a quote ) and that rabbi schwe answered him yes as far as i am concerned i have no problem with you. “it is the people around me” that have the problem i salute both rabbi bogomilsky for making the call and for rabbi schwei for his great answer lets hope we can move ahead with… Read more »
Rabbi Moshe Bogomilsky is a very intelligent man, not only in Torah and Halacha but also in simple “Bayn Adom Lachvyro”, which is a very important component to have in a Rov of the schunah.
He is a very practical man.
He understands very well regular life issues between people and how to resolve them well and practically.
He has a great reputation in this filed. If you have a conversation with him for a few minutes you will see this for your self.
Time for Schwei to get a taste of his own medicine. He was “elected” unopposed, and now what goes around comes around.
There are maalos and chesraines of living in the schunah and not. But not living in the schunah enables one to view everything with a different perhaps more distanced perspective. I happened to be in CH when Rabbi Mangel farbrenged in his shul about 2-3 months ago when he clearly set forth what the Rebbe had told him about running and his involvement with Merkos and issues that arose at that time. He stated clearly that he will not run. He emphasized that his wife and children did not want him to run. At that point, the issue was closed.… Read more »
What kind of election is it when there is only one candidate to vote for? I know that was the case with Rabbi Schwei and it was ruled by Rav Rosenberg to have been a legitimate elections, but it is far from ideal. In the case of the Vaad Hakohol elections, Rabbi Rosenberg allowed Shea Hecht to run, after disqualifying him, in order not to alienate a large portion of the community. Agree with it or not, there was a lot of wisdom in that move because now no one can dispute the absolute legitimacy of the status of the… Read more »
If it takes 3 years for one side not to put up a candidate i think they had enough time…. go fly a kite
Since we’re talking about a lifetime appointment for Rov, I think there should be an option on the ballott to vote NO.
If they don’t have any candidates then what was wrong with the other election?
If only having 1 candidate on the ballot was good enough for Rabbi Schwei’s own election then it is good enough now!
To start: In essence there should be two or more people running. But a time frame was given (plenty of time) and one side produced and one didn’t. That would mean that the side that didn’t produce does not have anybody willing to run with them. Let’s not forget that the Rabbi Schwei elections was also a one man election. It would be funny to see the Schwei people complaining now., Whats good for the goose is good for the gander. To COLLIVE: The poll you have above is not a fair question. No doubt any fair minded person would… Read more »
has it made a diffrence in the past ?
what wil change?
why now?
when will we be free
is it just me or dose a 1 canidate election bring worm and fuzzy memoreis
When Rabbi Schwei’s side submitted Rabbi Mangel as their candidate did they have his consent? If yes, why did he withdraw right after it was announced?
If not, why did they do it? Where is their respect for the intelligence of our community and for Rabbi Rosenberg with his Beis Din that are trying so hard to straighten things out and end machlokes in Crown Heights.
do you know what you say, or you say what you know ???
Has CHTs become a 2 party nation? Is there no-one independent? Or would such a candidate be spurned by both Rabbonim (forget about sides, its the …)
Word has it that there is a “fiercely” independent potential candidate, but who really want a vigorous independent opinion around town. All those people with turf to protect: chazokois, shteleh’s; koved zones (real and imagined). CHT’s is well populated with such types.
2 folds:
if there so sure that they will win then, why is Rabbi Osdaba’s side scared to let them put someone else up?
if its true that Rabbi Shwai’s side doesn’t have a candidate then they wont have someone to put up, anyway!
so let then put someone up, and let the community chose!
