The National Leadership Mission to Washington, DC of Agudath Israel of America has raised the issue of injustice done to Sholom Mordechai Rubashkin.
Relations with Israel, anti-Semitism, the needs of nonpublic Jewish schools were some of the main topics on the agenda in their July 29 meetings in the State Department and with White House officials.
But at a luncheon on Capitol Hill attended by a bi-partisan representation of Senators and Congressmen, the ongoing trial of the former manager of the country’s largest meat plant came to light.
Democratic Congressman Anthony Weiner of New York’s 9th congressional district has joined the many in the Jewish community who suspect Rubashkin is a victim, rather than an ordinary felon.
“I am extremely troubled and concerned with the injustice going on,” Weiner said about Rubashkin, according to one participant.
“This is something we need to pay close attention to,” Weiner added and headed back to the House floor delivering the memorable rant against Republicans.
Chaskel Bennett, member of the Board of Trustees of Agudath Israel, told COLlive.com: “The Rubashkin issue comes up very often in our conversations with public officials.”
“It comes up privately and publicly and I can say that most elected officials that we deal with are very aware of this issue and its deep concern to our community,” said Bennett, who is also a member of the board of C.O.J.O. of Flatbush.
“We fight for Sholom Morfechai today, because tomorrow this could happen to others in our community” he added and praised Agudath Israel leader Rabbi Chaim Dovid Zwiebel for “his tireless work on behalf of Rubashkin and Klal Yisroel.”
These statements were made even before Rubashkin’s attorneys presented incriminating evidence that Judge Linda Reade of the US District Court for Northern Iowa coordinated with prosecutors and acted as judge in the contentious conviction of Agriprocessors officials.
Reade sentenced Rubashkin to 27 years in prison for bank fraud and related charges, although prosecutors had sought a 25-year prison term.
Attorneys for Rubashkin filed a motion on Thursday that the case be transferred to another judge.
Wow what a CHEVRA MAN!!!
Good to see you in the forefront of Jewish askanus!
Whre has Mr. Weiner been the past two years? Or Shumer? Asleep. Now he deems it politically convenient to say a word about it. Big deal. A pure self serving opportunist.
people may not realize that keeping ones collarbone, knees and elbows covered etc. are not chumros. these are halachos.
Dressing according to halacha is a vessel for lots of brachos, and being machmir, presumably a vessel for even more brachos.
and B”H they are committed to keeping halacha!
Just the mere fact of this gentleman leaning over and discussing a judicial matter in professional terms is already a solid assurance of good things to come. It’s the same when the Akeret Habayit sets the stage for spiritual growth with nightly phone call conversations with other mothers, discussing and planning the next day’s agenda.
with the most recent distrurbing (though not surprising)revelations regarding the judge in sholom mordechais case where does that leave him? in other words it go from here ?and whats the time frame for the judge to respond?
First of all, please comment respectfully. you are assuming that you are the ONLY ONE who knows what is going on. ARROGANCE.
Politicians do and can have a roll. Mainly to bring the whole issue to the forefront. If you thing that that will not help than think again….
Rubashkin’s case is not just of Jewish concern, but of worldly concern. According to ‘The 7 Noahide Laws,’ laws which will bring peace, prosperity and happiness to mankind (If mankind is wise enough to institute it.) If non-Jews don’t support laws and courts of justice they bring on themselves and others death and destruction. If it doesn’t come through the hands of an earthly court it can, sadly, come from G-d Alm-ty. For a ‘super power’ to have such a system as they have here is an embarrassment to all thinking and concerned Americans. An innocent man, his family and… Read more »
Let me give you a glimpse into the real world – not the one your involvement starts and ends from reading about it. There is nothing – i repeat, nothing – politicians can do at the moment to help Rubashkin. You can comment and demand all you like but tachles – you can ask the family, his lawyers and askanim – the matter is not in the hand of government officials. All the petitions and letters and phone calls are all a waste of time at this point. All this will be needed only after the appeal – if it… Read more »

After reading the proceedings at the conference, at best Anthony Weiner made a bleep on the radar screen. Hopefully it is only a beginning.
