This week, about twenty five women embarked on a fascinating and engaging journey of learning at the JMS (Journey of Mind and Soul; the Institute of Advanced Judaic Study for Women). Rabbi Chaim Miller, Rabbi Yossi Paltiel, Mrs. Bronya Shaffer and Rabbi Yisroel Fried delivered classes on such topics as the definitions of tumah and tahara, the necessity of talking to G-d, divergent schools of Jewish theology and more.
This Sunday, July 18, a lecture series on “Intersections: Torah’s Encounters with the Sciences, Arts and Modernity” will begin with a guest appearance by Rabbi DovBer Pinson. Rabbi Pinson is a renowned scholar and teacher who is the founder of the Iyyun Institute, a center for Jewish life and learning in Brooklyn. He is also the author of numerous scholarly works, including “Inner Rhythms; the Kabbalah of Music,” “Reincarnation and Judaism; the Journey of the Soul,” and, most recently, an exposition of the laws, customs and mysticism related to the Upsherin.
Rabbi Pinson will speak about the responses of the Torah world to the Enlightenment and subsequent developments in secular thought, focusing on the views of Chassidus and, specifically, Chassidus Chabad. Admission is thirteen dollars for guests, and is free for registered students. This class begins promptly at 6:30 pm, at “the Bayit,” 556 Crown Street.
The JMS summer program will take place, be”H, through August 19th, with regular classes on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, and guest lectures on Sundays.
