Israeli Shekels worth $5,000 have been stolen from the central Chabad synagogue in Tverya, one of the four holy cities in Israel.
One of the city’s Shluchim, Rabbi Schneur Turkov said it happened over the weekend.
To get in, the thieves broke a window of the shul, and apparently tried to take the safe with them, but could barely move it due to its weight.
Instead, they stole Judaica such as pairs of Tefillin, tzedakah boxes and a laptop.
Turkov said he updated the police that a day before the robbery a few “shady looking characters” came by and asked for a Kippa to pray.
“After the burglary, I suspected them immediately,” he recalled in an interview with the local Kol Haderech radio station. “I hope the police will find them.”
