GYMIES hosted its first ever IRONMAN tournament for the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu program this Sunday. The boys have been training since October and have amassed a strong foundation in the self-defense art of BJJ.
Instructor Greg Runfola describes himself as “an ambassador of the sport.” He specifically takes pride in having brought Jiu Jitsu to Crown Heights where even the basic knowledge of self defense is clearly lacking.
The Ironman gave the boys a chance to showcase the growth and success they have experienced all year.
GYMIES Director Sarah Benarroch is amazed at the progress the boys have made. “When the boys came into the program in October they all started at the bottom, white belts, no degrees. Of 65 boys in the program this year, 6 were promoted to yellow belt. We are very proud”
She also commends the parents for their commitment to the program. “These kids are very lucky to have a group of parents dedicated to getting their kids active at a young age.”
Sunday, these parents got to see the results of their efforts. “The excitement in my boys this week was so amazing to watch. And getting to see firsthand what they have been up to, I’m really proud of my boys!” Says one mom with three boys in the program, with her 6 year old promoted to yellow belt.
GYMIES is a children’s gym, with gymanstics, ballet, dance and martial arts programs. The Martial Arts program is set to begin again in the Fall.
GYMIES has also planned a Summer camp for 3 year olds as well as Summer GYMNASTICS & BALLET programming.

The Rambam promotes physical and spiritual balance. What parent doesn’t want a self confident and healthy child? My daughter hits harder than her twin brother! Sweet!

wow! way to go! I am in awe…
ur montreal cuz
What exactly do you find so troubling about the parents attending an end of the year tournament? It doesn’t in any way discount all the amazing learning that they do. It shows support and excitement for a new skill the have learned.
If you don’t see any thing wrong with the kids learning marshall arts, why can’t the parents enjoy whatching?????
Kids are not stupid, they know this wasn’t our top priority for their education this year. It was a way to get some healthy excersize, and have fun, AFTER school!
# 30 – You are 100% correct. When I learnt in ULY ocean pkwy and received an award for accelling in the annual Midos Toivos campaign, my parents came from Crown Heights, and my grandparents from Brough Park to be there when I received the award. When I look at the pictures of parents and grandparents beaming with joy it reminds me of how my parents and grandparents looked when I received my award. My parents excitement at my achievment left a really strong impression on me of what is important to them (I was a good ballplayer but never… Read more »
which allows the implementation of many ethical standards on an individual and group setting in the real world..
Should it be ….called…”Jew-Jitsu?”

Go Zevi,go!!
Yanky and Dovi we missed your pictures!!
Go Yehudah, you look great!!
so when your kids does well in any area aside from mishnayos baal peh, dont praise him, or get excited in any way. because of course all kids are wonderful at memorizing things they don’t understand and when we tell them that’s the only thing that’s special to us, well, wow i’m thinking of the confident adults they’ll become.
All so nice and tznius!
כיף לראות אותך מנדל מק.ג.ב.
nice hat Dinie!
I bet you their all, just most of them are prob tucking it in!

Who’s wearing a Camp YOA yarmulke???
When I was a kid growing up in CH there a was a frume yid who taught Karate at the Oholei Torah gym (jewish center) – It was a great program. I am very turned off by the amount of excitement people have for this program, and the prominence this is given by the parents and grandparents as if this were a Mishnayos Baal Peh competition Parents, these programs are a great outlet for our kids, but we need to make it crystal clear to our children which achievements are special to us and what is just fun and games.… Read more »

Can we get a program for adults???
aside from the amazing shape something like jiu jitsu can get you in its one of the ‘safer’ martial arts in that its not as violent as some of the others out there, its more technical.
ADULTS, MEN (AND I”M SURE LADIES) ALSO WANT TO LEARN JIU JITSU!
PLEASE SET UP CLASSES FOR ADULTS!
Get a life!

adorable pix! who’s that guy in the maroon tshirt?
I’m not a Crown Heightser but i was thrilled to see that this class is available to kids in the community. BRazilian Jiu Jitsu is a great start for kids to understand body mechanics the basics of balance and how to brake it. i am a Krav Maga instructor myself and over shobbes i showed a few kids some techniques to get them excited. i was really impressed that these ten-year-olds had a decent understanding of ground fighting because they took this class. Jewish Self Defense is very important and every one Jew, especially in Crown Heights should have a… Read more »
