WATERLOO, Iowa — Prosecutors dropped thousands of child labor charges against two defendants from an Iowa kosher slaughterhouse and allowed the company to plead guilty to amended charges.
Prosecutors dropped the charges Tuesday against former Agriprocessors Inc. owner Aaron Rubashkin and human resources employee Laura Althouse.
Former Agriprocessors manager Sholom Rubashkin – the owner’s son – still faces 83 charges in a trial that will begin with jury selection on Tuesday afternoon in District Court in Waterloo.
Sholom Rubashkin, the four others and the company originally faced more than 9,000 child labor charges.
Charges remain against former human resources manager Elizabeth Billmeyer and employee Karina Freund. Their trials will be held later.
Let me clarify. He is facing 6 1/2 years not 65 sorry on the State of Iowa Charges. 83 counts at 30 days maximum per count.
This is the State of Iowa Child Labor Law Trial. The last trial was the Federal (not State) Fraud Federal and Immigration trial. He is facing 65 years in Iowa if convicted and given max setence and a $55,000 fine. The State of Iowa approved $35,000 to bring back 8 witnesses(former workers) from Guatamala fro the trial. So I expect Iowa will want to recoup all of that money – The State of Iowa will go after Sholom with a Vegence I am afraid – But I honestly think the Sate will have a difficult time convicting him.
