On the eve of the opening of Sholom Mordechai Rubashkin‘s sentencing in Iowa, a group of Crown Heights residents gathered for prayer in his merit.
Members of Congregation Bais Shmuel Chabad met at the Rebbe’s Ohel in Cambria Heights, Queens, Tuesday night, and said Tehillim for the former Kosher meat plant exceutive charged with bank fraud.
“They are treating him like an arch-criminal, while he is a man of tzedakah, and this is his first enounter with the law,” one of them told COLlive, responding to the life sentence recommendation by the prosecuters.
For 30 minutes, the 60 men sporadically read chapters of Tehillim at their own pace in the cool and windy night air.
Two of Rubashkin’s nephews were present as well.
The group later sat in the large tent in the courtyard of Ohel Chabad Lubavitch for a Chassidus class led by Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak Jacobson, leader of Bais Shmuel and a renowed orator.
He taught a Maamar discourse on the theme of freedom in peace, based on a verse from Psalms, Pada beshalom Nafshi, “G-d has redeemed my life in peace.”
This discourse was taught by the Lubavitcher Rebbe in 1985, and later was edited by the Rebbe for publication.
It relates to the ‘Festival of Redemption’ of various Chabad-Lubavitch leaders who were imprisoned by the Tsar or later by the Communists, Chabad Research Unit explains.
The discourse explores the theme of ‘peace’, moving from the lower concept of conquest to a higher concept that one’s enemies genuinely become one’s friends.
The gathering was coordinated by Bais Shmuel’s Moshe Pinson.
Vans will be leaving from 770 to the Ohel to pray for Sholom Mordechai Rubashkin, Wednesday and Thursday at the following times- 7:30 am, 9:30 am, 11:30 am, 1:30 pm, 3:30 pm, 5:30 pm.
