Rabbi Dovid and Henya Laine of Crown Heights began the writing of a new Sefer Torah this week.
Over 300 of the Laine’s family and friends were in attendance, including Rabbi and Rebbetzin Zalman Kazen, Rabbi and Rebbetzin Osdoba, and the Raskin brothers and their families.
The surprise guests were the Laine’s children, Shluchim in cities and countries around the globe, who flew in to celebrate not only the new Torah, but Rabbi Laine’s 70th birthday.
The Rosenblum family from Pittsburgh, the Kalmanson family from Connecticut, Rabbi Aron Laine from Panama, the Rapoport family from Wisconsin, the Rubinstein family from Bal Harbor, Florida, and the Lipskier family from Orlando all joined at the Laine’s Montgery street home.
(The Azimovs from Paris and the Chazans from Milan were unable to attend due to the Volcanic eruption.)
The Torah is scheduled to be completed in October, and will be sent to the Shul of the Laine’s daughter and son-in-law, Chaim Boruch and Rivkie Lipskier, Shluchim at UCF College campus in Orlando, Florida.

Mazel Tov to Rabbi Laine and may he merit to have many more years of health and happiness with his wonderful Chassidishe family and extended family.
May we all have the zchus to write a Sefer Torah for our 70th Birthdays.
There are so many shluchim who can use a Sefer Torah in their Moisdos.
Answer to #2. Thanks for asking. Actuallly it’s a really beautiful ideal of how to celebrate a special birthday year – combine it with a Jewish value.
Their children on shlichus needed a sefer Torah, so the family celebrated his 70th by writing a Torah to be sent to the chabad house in Orlando.
The event was a beautiful family gathering, we had representatives from all extended family. The bubbes and zaides were truly shepping nachas!
The reason we wrote the Torah on the date of Rabbi Laine’s 70th birthday is to make the birthday meaningful. To write a Sefer Torah is a Mitzvas Asaai min Hatorah.
It doesn’t matter when one writes it . Any age is fine. That’s why the Rebbe was pushing to buy a letter in the Torah.
looking good!
its very nice. but forgive me i am trying to understand. is there a reason why they are making a sefer torah? 70th birthday? is there a special segula etc?
Rabbi Laine,
You are the most incredible person. So Kind giving, generous, always making people happy and most of all a quiet but true Talmid Chochom.
You are a true example to our children! May hashem give you many more years of good health and nachas, and all the brochos you want and need…ad bli dai!
Happy Birthday! Shnas Hatzlacha!
