The Florida Jewish Journal has selected 33 movers and shakers who have made an impact in Broward, Miami Beach and Palm Beach Counties.
The 33 chosen are “accomplished leaders” and “give of themselves, changing the way we live and think. They put our communities first.”
Included in the list were Rabbi Raphael Tennenhaus, Shliach in Broward County, Florida and Rabbi Moishe M. Lipszyc, Shliach in Fort Lauderdale.
Rabbi Raphael Tennenhaus: Enterprising leader
Rabbi Raphael and Goldie Tennenhaus started Chabad in Broward County in December 1980. They came to the South Broward community as a young couple and started a small shul on Wiley Street. That small congregation has grown into a large network of 11 center Chabad Centers in South Broward, the establishment of the Chaya Aydel Seminary, Florida’s only Jewish Teacher’s College for Women, as well as the construction of three mikvahs including one for women who are physically challenged.
“We have girls from around the world studying in our Chaya Aydel Seminary,” Tennenhaus said. “We also have dormitories for the girls on our campus.”
Tennenhaus’ congregation called Levi Yitzchok-Lubavitch is located at 1295 E. Hallandale Beach Blvd. in Hallandale and is the headquarters for the Chabad Centers in South Broward.
“We are home to more than 40 institutions and programs,” said Tennenhaus.
Rabbi Moishe M. Lipszyc: Developing Community
When Rabbi Moishe M. Lipszyc came to Fort Lauderdale 20 years ago and set up shop in a small storefront location, many residents in the Jewish community were pleased.
Observant Jews were especially joyous to finally have a shul that they could walk to in the Galt Ocean Mile area where approximately 10,000 residents live in hi-rise condominiums.
For years, residents of the condominiums on Galt Ocean Mile had tried to bring Jewish religious services to the area, but with little success. The Galt Ocean Mile Jewish community hosted religious services in the nearby North Beach Hospital community room, which has since been replaced by condo residences. They also met in area condominiums and private homes.
Lipszyc reached out to the Jews in the community and welcomed them to his small shul, Chabad-Lubavitch of Fort Lauderdale. His welcoming spirit gained him recognition in the area by many members of the Jewish community. Reform, Conservative as well as Orthodox Jews became members of his congregation.
