Banana Republic Coats made in China, Indonesia or Thailand are forbidden to wear according to Jewish law, the Monsey Shatnez Center said.
They are referring to men’s and boys, 3/4 length coats (“car coats”) which usually are black and the under-side of its collar is gray.
“Many coats are Shatnez and Asur to wear unless the collar is changes,” the center’s director R’ Yaakov Kreitman said in a message.
Shatnez is the prohibition in halacha derived from the Torah that prohibits the wearing of a fabric containing both wool and linen.
The center is supervised by Rabbi Avrum Hersh Wosner, Rabbi Cheskel Teitelbaum and Rabbi Ezriel Mayer Kohen.
A similar announcement was issued by the Lakewood Shatnez Labatory in January 2010, but they only singled out coats manufactured in China.
