Rubashkins Outraged at Holder

Family and friends of Sholom Mordechai Rubashkin are outraged at the refusal by the US Justice Department to hear their request that Attorney General Eric Holder look into the way Rubashkin’s appeals for bail have been denied.

Rubashkin and his attorneys have demonstrated, through various compelling measures (among them his willingness to remain under 24 hour surveillance at home), that he is not a flight risk. Nevertheless, their pleas for bail have been denied. His lawyers turned to the Attorney General to review this, yet that too, was denied.

In another disappointing development, Judge Linda Reade issued a response rejecting motions by the Rubashkin defense team to dismiss the trial because of many wrongs they felt were allowed to go unchecked during the trial proceedings.

In many instances, rather than clarify in legal terms why these motions should not be validated, she merely issued a self-referential document dismissing their claims.

Sholom Mordechai is expected to be sentenced shortly after Pesach, the Committee for Pidyon Shevuyim said and thanked the many individuals who have written letters on behalf of Rubashkin.

But many more are yet needed. Specifically, there is an urgent need for letters from community leaders and organizational leaders on their respective letterhead.

Letters describing their knowledge of Sholom Mordechai’s contribution to the Jewish community will yet be helpful if they are received within the next few days.

Lawyers are hopeful that with a good quantity of letters by various community leaders nationwide and even abroad, the judge might be persuaded to be merciful in sentencing.

There are only a few days left to act.
