I’ve been performing the Kapporot rite for about 30 years. It’s very emotional and I concur with Rabbi Shea Hecht. To me, it’s the most spiritually ‘healthy’ way to enter Yom HaKippur. Calling the rite ‘cruel’ has to be proven. This is a value judgement. I hold the chicken (I love animals.) by both wings, and when I hear it clucking, or defecating I realize it’s scared, I pat the head with my index (or free) finger, hold it closer to myself, and it QUIETS DOWN! We daven every day for such people who try to uproot Yiddishkeit or even part of it, and yes I am davka saying this on Erev Yom Kippur.
May they all do Teshuva now
