Representatives of the animal rights organization PETA will be on hand at the Kapparos ritual in Crown Heights on Wednesday, COLlive was told.
They will be distributing the flyer “Gelt, Not Guilt” at the Kapparos location of NCFJE on Eastern Parkway.
“We are encouraging people to use money instead of live chickens when performing the ritual,” Philip Schein of PETA told COLlive.
Representatives will also be distributing hundreds of origami chickens made from actual money, to encourage a “cruelty-free Kapparos.”
The flyers quote Rabbi Gershon Tannenbaum, Jewish Press columnist and Rabbinical Alliance of America (Igud HaRabbonim) executive, as saying “reviewing the entire current Kapparos situation, using alternatives to chickens, such as money to tzedakah might be a desirable option.”

LOL ,
every creature has a mission this world, and the chickens’ is so we can use them to help us do teshuva (right?). also chickens dont really have a long lifespan. SO WHATS THE PROBLEM IF WE USE THEM 4 KAPPOROS???????????

You are all going to be in for a rude awakening when you wake up one day shoveling coal in hell. You have no compassion for anyone but your own kind and own species. Shame on you.
BEST IDEA I’VE HEARD YET!!! SHOULD TOTALLY BE DONE!!! I WOULD BE THRILLED TO SEE THAT IN THE NEWS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ah bande mamzeirim
to each his own.
how dare you!!!! were are holier than chickens and if you don’t want to be then thats fine with me. i have compassion! when that chicken is swinging over my head i have compassion for a gd that put this creature in the world in order to give sustenance! in order so that i can repent and be forgiven. maybe you shouldnt mow your lawn for fear of the feelings of grass. and stop smoking it too
What kind of monsters are you if when you have an opportunity to be kind to animals, you just make fun of those who suggest it? Get over your holier than thou selves and have compassion for all living things. I’m sure that’s what God wants you to do anyway.
they probably dont call it that because its harder to pronounce
how dare they ridiculoe my chicken shnitzelech
I heard an interview on the radio a few weeks ago, where a prominent talk show host got a confession from a PETA leader to the effect that he steps on roaches in his house (though he was quick to add that his wife doesn’t). Some internet savvy guy can probably get the details and ask them about it.
Many people who use chickens hold them in a cruel way. Clutching both wings with one hand, way too tight. Many times the wings break when they fling it around their head. It isnt malicious, but it is causing the animal pain. That is against Shulchan Aruch!
“Hassidic Jews in Crown Heights receive funding from PETA to purchase chickens for Kapparot.”
LOLOL…
HA HAAA I can’t wait to cash in my origami chicken for the real thing. Everyone, this is your chance to turn over the evil into good!!! Just what we need for this yom kippur!!! to use the klippah of peta money for a very holy cause!! KAPPAROS WITH LIVE CHICKENSSSSS!!!! I hope Phil comes over to witness!!! Moshiach NOW!!!
Please make those posters!!!!!!!!
Awesome idea!!!!!!
So coooool!!
let’s hope these folks will be mistaken for a bunch of chickens…
SEE 29 NOW
YOU HIT THE JACKPOT!
gmar chasima tova
😉
can you imagine after years of doing kaporos on money peta made me decide that chickens are the way to go…….. Thanks peta!
those people usually are – what an irony
u so funny!
In some communities the chickens for kapporas are very expensive because kapporas is done as a fundraiser. I don’t blame anyone in this economy who uses money due to hardship. It is second best to chickens but it is allowed. It is also allowed to share chickens with others of the same gender. It is not the preferred way but it is permissible. I also think that it is fine to put the chicken in a box if handling it is a problem. I have also read that sometimes it is impossible to kasher all the chickens before Yom Kippur… Read more »
im opening an organisation called PEOPLE for the ETHICAL TREATMENT of PEOPLE!!
PETA has no clue what that means, and so I contend to open my organisation in response to their’s.
While the Natzis yemach shemom were gassing Yidin, they had a project “Save the Whale”. Nobody should get discouraged about doing Kapporos with chickens.
i can’t believe that not only did YOU print this but that they are being ALLOWED into crown heights!
The shulchan Aruch says to use Chickens and the Rebbe used chickens. We don’t need Peta telling us what to do.
What a genius idea!!!
Let’s make signs tomorrow that say:
“Please line up here to receive your free dollars and then go buy your chicken!” and place them near the Peta Punks that are handing out their origami arts and crafts.
We could even take some pics and send them to the media and put them under some title like:
“Hassidic Jews in Crown Heights receive funding from PETA to purchase chickens for Kapparot.”
A gmar chasima tova to all-
Moshiach NOW!!!!
Philip Schein & Company have done terrible things!!!!!!

You don’t need to have any guilt for doing a mitzvah properly. Do some of us need to learn how to properly hold a chicken? Yes. Should we drop kaparos because of it? No.
Trust me, PETA would be upset about this even if we were keeping chickens in individual fur-lined cages. They are upset that they are being shechted.
The only ones who should feel guilty are those who are trying to stop Yidden from keeping Torah and mitzvos.
maybe all the peta people want to turn themselves in to chickens so we can do kapporos on them, these sick people.
it starts with chickens where does it end, it doesnt.
when you see one of them look at what they are wearing, are they wearing any leather? if so they are wearing an animal, and do they know how it was treated?
the clothes they are wearing was it made in a sweatshop? oops thats people that were abused they don’t care.
quack jobs,
OUR minhag is clearly with a chicken. Shluchim use much resources just to be able to get chickens for kapparos. Under no circumstance can you agree to use money unless you are physically unable to get chickens.
I think that in honor of PETA’s visit to Crown Heights, we should have every single Crown Heightser at Kapporos even if you weren’t strict in the past.
Don’t be moved by those who scoff. This din in Shulchan Aruch refers to these wackjobs!
If the think that after what they did to the rubashkin family and desecraded us they can come to ch.because if u mess with 1 of us u mess with all of us. They have no right coming to crown hights and believe me they are probably going to stop after 5 min of protesting because im sure ppl are not going to stand for it. we dont need them …the world doesnt need them. they are just of bored people with nothing at all to do with their lives only ruin others. If the torah says chicken we do… Read more »
Don’t you guys remember where in recent years, they slandered us, and took secret footage and soiled our good name? At least this year, they’re not coming undercover, and they’re making their agenda known to all.
They’re trying to get in through trendiness, unfortunately for them, they friendly efforts, while they will definitely be noticed, will most likely not reap any benefits.
Kaparos is something that is as jewish as gefilte fish, we’re not prepared to give it up, but we admire your honesty.
maybe we should make massive signs around kappores of these articles- peta hypocrites

Poiretz Geder Yishchenu Nachash
So, they can eat their money chickens…
Seriously, we should take our Torah lessons from Peta? They don’t don’t believe in Torah or have a clue what it is about…
I’m ordering about 20 grand of the money chickens-
Where do we send the orders to?
Do they offer free delivery????????
Read these writings from Philip Schein: ‘Mock Meat Is Kosher With three of the five largest kosher beef plants in the United States having stopped production, {Thanks to Hannah and I} consumers can expect significant shortages of kosher meat as well as price hikes {Thanks to Hannah and I} (“Shelves Empty as Three Plants Stop Beef Production,” November 14). {Thanks to Hannah and I} But don’t worry: Many companies make great-tasting, kosher-certified mock meats. Jewish law mandates that animals be treated with compassion and respect. By choosing meatless meals, you can adhere to Jewish principles and save animals from pain… Read more »
Their whole job is to go undercover and be ‘mosser’ others.
We don’t need or want this ‘mosser’ around our neighborhood.
He is personally responsible for the tzoros of the Rubashkin family!
He is not welcome here!!!
Follow this link to see a picture of the ‘mosser’ Philip Schein. The photo was taken by his partner in crime, his wife, Hannah.

Y is it cruel if it gets eaten ?!?!?
I THINK THIS CHICKEN THING IS CRAZY, LETS GIVE TZEDAKA INSTEAD.
#5 is probably a Peta Agent!
Is PETA in the origami lessons business these days?
hey Peta Punks-
Please have a bagful of your money origami chickens ready.
I’m sure each family in Crown Heights could use one of those as a Yom Tov gift.
they can get a free chicken meal from marmalstein if they are hungry after all that work …..
Peta has used the images of the Holocaust -comparing chickens to victims of the holocaust and you give them free propaganda?
What, exactly, does COL stand for?
or do teshuva-this makes me sick. What a sick bunch of people. They worry more about animals than they do about people. Peta, yimach shemom, is a group whose main weapon are by trying to make people’s lives miserable and with absolute prusskeit. They take worst case scenario photos and claim that these pics are a reflection of the norm. An animal must be treated kindly and with respect according to the Torah. The same Torah has told us to use parchment for Tefillin and Mezuzos and meat of animals for Korbonois. Beware of these guys- they are dangerous and… Read more »
i would spit at them if i see them
but it is a nauseating experience.
sure a few people have a clean, plump chicken handed to them and then taken away but for most there’s the pervasive stink, surrounded by hundreds of dying, starving, feces-covered chickens and putrid street. and there’s the slaughter line – like being inside a slaughter house.
it may be a custom, and many may prefer to continue the custom even if it is physcially repulsive, but there’s nothing wrong with using tzedaka either.
http://www.petakillsanimals.com/
They should clean their own house before starting up with others.
i’ll be taking 4 of those chickens made out of money to go buy myself a real chicken to do kapparos with, this is just great, i love you peta
Do me a favor.
We are NOT causing pain to animals.
PETA sounds like a bunch of bored people
i can hardly breath from laughing! this is our minhag of how we do this mitzva! you can’t pay me to change!
PETA = People for the Eating of Tasty Animals
