On the first night of Chanuka the city of Playa Del Carmen in Mexico had its first grand public menorah lighting in the history of the resort city, located just south of Cancun on the coast of the Caribbean Sea.
The ceremony was attended by 80 local Jews who are involved in the Jewish Community Center of Playa Del Carmen – Chabad Lubavitch which was established by Shliach Rabbi Mendel Goldberg and his wife Chaya.
Located at a central ‘5th Avenue’ – La Quinta location, near a local Haagen Dazs and Starbucks, the Menorah remained lit until midnight each night of Chanukah, to the surprise and delight of tourists who passed by.
Passersby who stopped to talk were from the US, Canada, Israel, England, France, Argentina, Colombia, Panama and many other locations around the world. All were thrilled to have a Menorah just like in their hometowns.
The Menorah lighting was preceded by a speech from Rabbi Goldberg about the miracle of Chanuka and how a little light can push away a lot of darkness, and the Menorah was then lit by Playa real estate developer Jack Perlman.
The crowd then burst into singing and dancing in the street, as young and old enjoyed traditional doughnuts and the great holiday atmosphere.
