Governor of Arizona Jan Brewer is nationally known for her strict enforcement of border security at the Mexico – U.S. border and fighting illegal immigrants.
But when the Republican arrived at the Wesley Bolin Plaza across from the State Capitol in Phoenix to light Chabad’s nine-foot menorah, she was in a genial mood.
She was warmly welcomed by the Head Shliach to Arizona, Rabbi Zalman Levertov and fellow Chabad Shluchim in the Phoenix area, along with Jewish community members and their children.
“The menorah serves as a symbol of Arizona’s dedication to preserve and encourage the right and liberty of all its citizens to worship God freely,” Rabbi Levertov was quoted in KPHO – 5 TV station.
With Latkes and gifts for the children on hand, the Governor admitted she knows “a little about the story” of Chanukah but stated that “having you here is a wonderful choice of ours.”
She went on to light the ‘Shamash’ of the Menorah, but not before wishing all Jews in the state a Happy Chanukah and “may we light the world with good will.”
